DIY Bellypans, front mud guards, bearing protection ect.

I'm collecting my (ebay) flexi bug today:)

As well as feeling very happpy i'm also feeling a tightness around the pocket area:eek: ......3m blade needs some friends........Petrol, london to camber............expensive....memories of Blue peter presenters making stuff.........EUREKA!!

I'm sure I can make a few items to a good enough standard to save a few quid , thus being able to then spend on more kites ect.

Has any one ideas or photos of DIY kit that they have made?

I'm going to swing by B+Q today and look for materials.

Front mudguard, using stiff 2/3mm black PVC guttering?

Side Impact Protection, hot waterpipe insulation material?

Footrest grip, bicycle innertube, wound or slipped on?

Bearing protector for front top steering, a lid from aresol can, anyone know of a brand thats the right size?

Detachable bellypan, a recycled 4mm PVC dustbin has been suggested.

Wheel bearing protection........?

Splash guard........?

Rear/axle bag.....?

Speedo..........?

Anyone got ideas or photos of sucessfull projects/items.

Unsucessfull items also welcome as I think we can put our collective brain in gear to overcome any design or manufacturing issues.

For the belly pan, Wilkinsons do a good black dustbin which is quite smooth, ie. no mouldings running down it. It's ribbed slightly on the outside but smooth on the inside. About £6.

If you have a decent mudguard there shouldn't be any need for a splash guard.

I have homemade mudguards on my buggy, pics on my website. The front one is made from a flat piece of plastic.

I used a heavy duty plastic rubble-bag as a belly pan - just to protect the seat from abrasion and keep my bum dry. Doesn't look eat and often needs replacing, but is functional.

Splash-guard would be good, but my buggy is not a common one.

With a mudguard and bellypan you won't need a splashguard.

My bellypan is a dangerous bob special, and my mudguard was made for me out of one of those BIG blue plastic barrels you sometimes find washed up on the beach - saw the bottom off, cut it in half, stick it back together, hey presto ;)

(ask mrbuggy for details, it was him that did it. only cost me a few beers and a bar of chocolate)

I've also seen the lampshade-like doggy collar things you get from the vets being put to good use as mudguards. (you know, the things to stop them chewing sore paws etc)

For your footrest grips you're better with bicycle OUTER tyres with good treads - wrap round and cable tie on Very tight. (maybe a bit of glue as well?)

You're right about pipe lagging for your siderails though. A bit of duct tape will hold them on. Maybe a few cable ties as well, but mind where you put the ends - they can be sharp.

For rear storage, look around for motorbike bungee cargo netting. Just hooks on, easy-peasy. Mind you want one with small holes. (you'll see what I mean)

Speedo - halfords wireless effort.

When I go to the beach I use one of those lampshade dog collar things that the vets put on. Cut a bit out and cable tie to the forks, not the prettiest solution but works well for me.

hose clips work well for holding say a bicycle tyre section to the foot rest, put the screw bit on the bottom... they go much tighter than cable ties

and be careful with cable ties, iv got three scars on my arms from them

Fantastic community response guys....go, go, go, Bugs!

Collected my first buggy on a long n wet drive to Essex n back to london and Im very happy to say......

The buggy is fantastic, never been used, only pushed around the garden with a one year old at the wheel.

Front guttering mudguard bending was tricky as it wanted to have a wavey edge,so I let it, the cuttlefish look is in this year! Added a onepiece metal stay, as in a bycycle example. It's very strong and will take a very good kick. Materials; PVC,Coathanger,2 rivits n clips, 2 cable ties. price about 90p. May try vacuum forming next time.

Anneski, congrats on the 1000 th post, I feel so privelaged;) I'll pop down the bike shop and ask for a busted one , I presume the Knobblier the better?

Side rails, a friend came around yesterday and saw me cabletieing the lagging on, he went to his car and returned with velcro ties, very much like your belt for your jeans but 100% velcro, fantastic, releasable without sharp (MXbiker:eek: ) or hard edges, 10mm wide. I highly reccomend them

Speedo, What (Halfords) model number is it, set at 377mm Diameter?

Decatholon have them for £6 but the french sales assistant didnt know if the went down the anything less the 16". Any suggestions?

Martin, Geat photo's, see you went for a folding method on the front, thus avoiding the "cuttlefish" look. I never considered the rear ones, did you paint them yourself? wow:cool: Wilkinsons dont have anydustbins on their website at the mo, when did you get it? Will look for a boot bag.

Footpegs, Knobbly tyre probably, cable ties (tight enough?) or Jubilee clips(rust?), Mmmm, any other solutions?

Bellypan, ebay one looks great, but I wanna make my own, corrieflute sign as donated from B+Q garden center is my temp for now, (Velcro'ed on)3-4 or 5mm plastic would be stronger, anyone know where I could find some cheep or free material, possibly old packaging materials.

Head bearing cover needs to be a spraycan lid of 41 mm Dia, I need youall get your rulers out as theres nothing in my flat that will work:(

Bearing protectors, i know nothing about them, would a base from a yought pot cut into a polo shape do the trick?

Well times getting on and I have to pickup mates (Landboarders) in north london and get to Camber, low tide at 3.58. Lets see if my mudguard, bellypan, Groundstake, innertube pegs, stand up ot their first day out.

:) Dave.

You seem to be missing the point of a belly pan, they were designed as Rectile Impact Protectors, what you've fitted isn't much use other than as a 'kid on'.

Remember razor shells have been known to rip seats apart, your bit of corrieflute sign won't stop them. Might do as a template for a proper one though :)

As posted before me, the stuff you made your belly an out of istn gonna stop jack **** if your unlucky enough to role over soming sharp!!

Ground Stakes, Rocks, Sticks, Razor shells (called Razor shells for a reason) etc etc will rip your belly pan to bits (and any other bits of your body it comes into contact with!!!)

...razor shell torn arse is not something i would like to go through :eek::eek:

... I wouldnt skimp, i would buy a proper one, but you could always make one from an old plastic dustbin

The large front wheel I've put on my flexi buggy doesn't leave enough clearance to put a mudguard inside the forks - any ideas for one that sits over the forks?

Posted

How about the mudguard isnt a full conventional type. what if it is rectangular piece of PVC, bent into a u shape, only going from nut to nut, around the side of the wheel and dropping lower where it is necessary, as opposed to over it.

Attached using ties or velcro (two per fork) to the forks, that way it would not drop to scrape (plough) the ground. As it is only comming part way up the wheel it wont hit the oversteering lug..;)

go to halfords and ask if they have any of the mounain bike tyres in the skip.

cut the wire band out then cut to lenght.

go to the local boating shop or skate shop or even lidl and get some grip tape. its sticky back and will hold to the foot peg. its no good to put on as it is and use it as it wears very fast but all you need it for it to stop the tyre slipping.

put the tape on the foot pag then the tyre on top the zip tie on. i use 5mm as its what i had at hand. they have stayed on for ever with no problems.
