Don't know - if you find out how to reset it without doing a factory reset let me know !

A cool thing you can do with the eTrex is to go into service mode:

Hold down the PAGE UP (top left button) and PAGE (top right button)together and then press POWER. It'll show a whole lot of stuff including current internal temperature, software version, voltage left, button test.

To exit service mode, press POWER.

Press UP, ENTER and POWER simultaneously in service mode to reset to factory defaults. (If you're sure you really want to !)

Press PAGE twice to go into screen test mode, press it again and again to do different tests.

Your post made me curious because I haven't set my Etrex to show the 'odometer' only the 'odometer trip'.

On the same page I have set mine to show:

Trip Odometer

Max. speed

Moving Average

Time moving

Time stopped

For the interest of this thread, I changed a field to show the odometer but never figured out how to zero it easily but as it isn't important to me, I'm not bothered about it.

dmb explains how to set the factory defaults that I won't try

When I rec'd my GPS, it was in Arabic but I changed the script to English (that was fun). To be honest, I don't want to go through that excercise again, so will not experiment with factory setting defaults.

Changing to metric units is fairly easy.

You have probably noticed your buttons marked PWR, PAGE & ENTER. The up & down scroll buttons aren't marked.

Switch on (PWR)

Flick through pages (PAGE) until you reach MENU screen

Scroll down to SETUP then enter (ENTER).

Scroll down to UNITS & enter.

Scroll down to the bottom field, which probably reads either STATUTE or YARDS in your case.

Scroll to the unit you require.

In your case, I understand you need metres.

Scroll to METRIC & enter.

Job done

Page (PAGE) back to your screen, which shows your odometer & you should see units in metres. Speed & moving average will be shown in kph (kh).

I operate my GPS in metric units because of my location, which is predominantly metric although we buy petrol in Imperial gallons.

On another interesting note, I keep my position format in degrees & minutes e.g. E56º 27.123'. You can set the format in either all degrees, or degrees, minutes & seconds or like I do in degrees & minutes.

I set my GPS to degrees & minutes because that is pretty much how all the off-roaders are set up here. All my buggying mates are set up this way.

When visitors come here, I reset their GPS's to the degrees & minutes format, just so that we are all talking the same language.
