on the open sea you would be very cold if you had to body drag around for even a short period, in shallow lagoons no problem and in the shallows close to shore, but for longer periods out on the sea with dunkings it would be very cold, and your not 16 any more

I agree with Kitingcolin, the further you go out the deeper it gets and the colder it get!

But a 3mm with a thermal rash vest maybe ok.

Its definately 5mm wetsuit weather now though and not dry suit weather ;)

Iv been riding in a 5mm full length all winter up at blackpool with a hole in the right upper arm (~4cm) and my right knee completely exposed (~20cm) so the water was constantly running straight through. I was only learning aswell so i was always in the water. Im sure itl be fine just grit ur teeth wen u go under and back up asap! The worst times are at the end of a long session wen ur getting tired and uv not gone under for sum time and then you notice the cold

Agree...

Hunny area (The Wash) is 2°C cooler than on the West and South coast. Water feeds in from the North Sea not the Atlantic Gulfstream.

Its still very easy to get hypothermia - age has nothing to do with how the cold will effect you. If you are in the sea and get cold you will stay cold.

learn and follow the 100-degree rule.

How cold is really up to you and your physique.

Although 6 foot 4, i am a skinny runt. I swam across the forth late last year, as a result i know that i have a maximum of 35-40 minutes in water of 12 Degrees without any wet/dry suit.

As long as you are moving about, you don’t feel the cold. The danger is that though, i did not feel cold whilst i was swimming, as soon as i came out the water i realised how cold i was.

All i can say, is take your time and try to build up time spent in the water by 10mins at a time. I don’t know how much wet suites take the edge off the cold. But best to be safe than sorry in cold water.

Here is a couple of pictures. The more weight you have, the warmer you’ll be!

PMSL, so we're never going out surfing at all in the UK then :) Seriously though the 100 degree rule eliminates approximately 70% of the days in the year. According the to official average UK air and water temps we'd not be surfing except in june and july :D

totally, dont think the water temp ever gets above about 10 degrees round my way...

swapped to a 3mm suit without arms a couple weeks back and im not dead yet....

there are so many factors to take into account, i have seen cheap 5mm suits that looked so bad u suspect they would be dramatically colder than a decent 3mm suit. windchill is just as important when kitesurfing than water temp imo

Not got much personal experience of failure but kitesurfing you can get away with a less than adequate suit and just stay out of the water on a warmish day like we are having. The problem is being prepared for the worst possibility - self rescue from a good distance from the beach, getting cold then is a real problem and your bigget worry.

Its always doable just take car of where you are riding and the conditions, use sense and stay safe.

well put Djmoz, always got my good sence head on when it comes to kite surfing geeze. I never really go out to far at mo prob 500 yards max as the water stays pretty shallow at hunny plus im still at rookie status and will definaately get a few good dunkins until i get this cant go left thing sorted out !!
