paddyc Posted January 14, 2007 Report Posted January 14, 2007 Planning a road trip round Scotland after the old exams are over, and was wondering wheter you could kitesurf at southerness pt on the solway firth. Cheers Paddyc Quote
The Flyin Scotsman Posted January 14, 2007 Report Posted January 14, 2007 On past experience of southerness access isn't the best, and the tide is pretty quick in and out so could be a bit 'rippy' although I've not kitesurfed there just buggied so couldn't tell for certain. I know people who've kitesurfed at Sands of Luce near stranraer though, its got top access and a campsite right on the beach. Kev Quote
angus8ken Posted January 14, 2007 Report Posted January 14, 2007 heard good things about southerness.... i had a look at luce bay, wasnt enough wind to get out but it looked ok... question is why are you looking at that area? it seems to me that the best kitesurfing is to be had up north or on the islands... why not make a proper trip of it Quote
Foilman Posted January 14, 2007 Report Posted January 14, 2007 I've had some of my best sessions on the water in the UK there - OK I know thats not saying much but still! Best wind is a South Westerly. The tide goes a long long way out, so get there an hour or two before high tide, and count on a long walk back up the mud when you're done. If you stay fairly close in, you can have a lot of fun in waist deep water for several hundred yards - and as you go out to the deeper stuff, the wind will pick up more. Beware of the rocks though which surround the lighthouse. Best bet is to turn Right as you hit the beach, and drive along the track round the point to the long sandy beach - loads of space to play - and its pretty good at low tide for buggying / boarding on too if you dont mind getting covered in estury mud!
