kiteingcolin Posted September 20, 2006 Report Posted September 20, 2006 http://www.freemyimage.com/ims/pic.php?u=1370K2Cpd&i=14254">http://www.freemyimage.com/ims/pic.php?u=1370K2Cpd&i=14254 CLICK ON TO SEE THE WIND TODAY AT NEWBROUGH, 4 of us sailed and jumped big, phil won the contest with a big balls 75 ft (aprox) watched and verified by three of us, allmost the full hight of his kite, i only managed a girlie 45 ft(first time out on my atom and worried), andy was too light to go for it (12 stone) wayne was full of flu and suffering from a bruised foot, 4 of us out, 2 at a time then one at a time, very very scary! andy and phil on 7mtr warroo's wayne and me took turns the 7mtr flexi atom, which of course would have won, but it was phils birthday and we let him win, andy claims that if you add up his 2x 20ft jumps and his 10 ft one, he beat me, we are claiming the sailing in the highest wind this year record, ??? or very nearly if not quite Quote
gregh Posted September 20, 2006 Report Posted September 20, 2006 where are the pics of the jumps then!!! Quote
AliB Posted September 20, 2006 Report Posted September 20, 2006 same wind as we had the other weekend but we got the jumps on film Quote
enterusername Posted September 20, 2006 Report Posted September 20, 2006 same wind as we had the other weekend but we got the jumps on film winner! Quote
DANH1599968671 Posted September 20, 2006 Report Posted September 20, 2006 Sorry im with alib, we had proof for that one:D Quote
muppetdude1 Posted September 20, 2006 Report Posted September 20, 2006 gonna chuck spanner in works here but i think this is not good publicity for the sport equipment failure in winds outside the recommendations of kites of these sizes will result in probable death if you remain attached to an out of control looping kite cos u sure wont be conscious on impact with the water im of the opinion it can be too windy to kitesurf safely in winds over 35 mph plus apologies for spoiling your excitement but with current forecast im not changing my diary to sail in unstable winds be careful chaps - jumping high is great but if it goes badly wrong....... Quote
Pike Posted September 20, 2006 Report Posted September 20, 2006 no pics/video = no cigar:rolleyes: I managed a 48 ft jump yesterday witnessed by 2 dog walkers, 1 labrador, a poodle and a dolphin....... no really colin we belive you really we do....so how did you measure the jumps exactly? Quote
kiteingcolin Posted September 20, 2006 Author Report Posted September 20, 2006 well after a rest we sat in the car park and tried to work it out, andy had a realy good formula that he wanted me to use to for his jumps, the lighthouse on the rocks to the right of the beach is known to be 60 ft high (as in the beach guide,) and its true to say that from the beach i could clearly see daylight from the top of said lighthouse and andys feet, so the others think i should reconsider andys jump and count it closer to 65 ft, still will not top phils rocket booster, he was at least 25 ft above the lighthouse, on a more serious and helpfull note we now know the max wind on the 7mtr warroo and 7 mtr atom kites= 59 mph for a 13 stone phil, wayne and myself are much bigger so we could handle 1 mph more at a push(wayne 2 mph) Quote
kiteingcolin Posted September 20, 2006 Author Report Posted September 20, 2006 same wind as we had the other weekend but we got the jumps on film realy? we (the gang of four )were at hells mouth the same day and it was stronger there, a measured 57 mph, a soft 55 mph at rossi i was informed, anyway you should be ashamed sailing in such dangerously strong winds, us four only have a short time left on earth now so we have to just do it, how else are we to know where our own limits lie Quote
AliB Posted September 21, 2006 Report Posted September 21, 2006 we had a pit crew though. very important in these windstrenghts. Quote

ShapeShifter Posted September 21, 2006 Report Posted September 21, 2006 Oh and BTW - El Nino conditions are forming strongly - the winds must either be due to this or the tail of hurricane gordon. Quote

kiteingcolin Posted September 21, 2006 Author Report Posted September 21, 2006 So' date=' wot did U think of the Atom Colin? Alot of people are sayin its the same as the Ion, but like yourself I didnt get on with the Ion but am doin real well with the Atom-so wot are your thoughts on it?[/quote'] well finding a high wind kite was always going to be an issiue, i did not want a kite with an agenda to trash its user as often as possibe, like when you bear off wind to avoid a breaking wave and the kite pull you off downwind without mercy ending in a massive explosion, and being able to walk to the water without helpers holding you secure, a kite that gives you confidence in silly winds the atom is well made, and in the 50mph winds it was very noticeable that it did not flutter on its trailing edge when being carried around or sitting on the sand so long life and reducing the chances of the lines at the wing tip being spun into a birds nest, the kite has to be flown with a lot of depower pulled on, as we found the kite felt at its best with maximum power coming on at around 6 inches from the chicken loop, this gave a good gust response as with the depower set with more power available caused the gusts to transfer to much power to the user, once i got used to this i was more than happy on the water, the 7 atom has loads of power if you want it and it comes on nice and soft at first then remains hard without twitching, the kite is not at all fast which is A BLESSING, i had the kite on demo, and was so pleased with it its now mine, i will be changing the flexi release for a slingshot lock and load, and changing the bar for a slingshot one with the big hole, the back lines are bridle free, and the front lines have a tiny ion type bridle but with 4 mm dynema lines for the pully run, easy to replace, its a one pump kite like the ion, and it resists the fall back in the window habit that is found in all other bow type kites, as for boosting this is the same kite alib used to get his silly high 75 ft jump at rossi and the float is silly long as i found out, good points; stability build quality stable,no trailing edge flutter power there all the way through the power stroke not twitchy not at all to fast easy relaunch almost total depower cheap (ish) £100 less than ion poor points; quick release to quick to release hole in the bar to small bag good for 7mtr but will be to small for larger sizes kite leash has the crappy clasps on each end (mine opened and released my old 9mtr ion one windy day) Quote
