kitingplasterer Posted September 30, 2005 Report Posted September 30, 2005 hi, has anyone travelled with american ailines with a kitebag?? They seem to only allow a 62inch max dimension of a bag and this is not big enough to take kit!! anyone had any experience with them, any help would be grand lee Quote
kitingplasterer Posted September 30, 2005 Author Report Posted September 30, 2005 anyone?? ive just had an hr long argument with them, there website states they will tak surf board, wind surfing equip but it also states that the max size ofr any baggage internationally is 62 inc (width/height n depth) this is 157cm and there max excess baggage is 200cm/80inch again height/width/deth. Has anyone seen a windsurfing board or surfbnoard that is this small. NO!!! I need to hear from people who have managed to get around these ridiculous rules, im stuck with these 2 tickets for a kiting trip but i cant take a travel bag and i cant really travel with 3 small bags, plus my board is 155cm. npeac Posted October 3, 2005 Report Posted October 3, 2005 the 62 inch thing is for normal bags and is an up one side and along the length added together. i know cos i got stung for $100 by them. if you book on an surf board its normally taken that this is whatever size it is and not part of the 62 inch rule hence the need to book it. Q-bert Posted October 3, 2005 Report Posted October 3, 2005 Have a look on the ALT.....windsurfing newsgroup. There is a long discussion detailed there about this issue. Seems that the website is actually incorrect and they will take longer items. Have a look, may provide some good ammunition Quote
Q-bert Posted October 3, 2005 Report Posted October 3, 2005 Forum wont let me edit my previos posting. I meant rec.windsurfing newsgroup. Quote
kitingplasterer Posted October 3, 2005 Author Report Posted October 3, 2005 all of what is said on the rec windsurfing website all refers to travellers within the untited states and not from international destinations. The max allowed from outside the usa is 80", anything from 62" to 80" is subject to a charge of $110- each leg of the flight and as i have 3 legs it guna get expensive. Plus i aint going to find a bag 80" to take all my gear. NIGHTMARE Quote
cstowell Posted October 7, 2005 Report Posted October 7, 2005 I've flown to and from the states with American, Delta and Continental recently (within the last 4 months). No problems checking baggage in at all, including a 188cm/74" long snowboard bag (not previously booked in). The only issue for me was that my flight out to the UK with Delta had an allowance of 32Kg and the FAA have apparently made some changes recently to baggage allowances, so I was charged $25 per bag that was over 26Kg - due to high oil prices... No carrier can take a bag over 32Kg/70 pounds due to health and safety reasons (you may be able to get past this by prebooking it as freight cargo). If you booked your flights before 1st Sept then you should have a 2 x 32Kg per bag allowance, otherwise 2 x 26Kg bag. You'll be fine with the size, but seriously, I'd worry about the weight of everything you are looking to take. A 80" bag with all your kit is going to weigh like 40Kg.... Quote
cstowell Posted October 7, 2005 Report Posted October 7, 2005 Where are you going? Have you thought about renting some equipment locally to save on luggage allowances/sizes? Might be cheaper/easier... Quote
