I fly kites on the beach, have tried and didn't like kitesurfing and am a long time surfer and windsurfer and have a question:

Why do a lot of kitesurfers wear shorts or full nylon suits over their wetsuits?

It can't be for warmth or chaff(or if it is- buy a decent windsurfing suit and quality harness-they're designed for the same harness load and wind chill..)

Some peeps have been asking and it's got me wondering too- being an auld fart I have maybe (thankfully ) missed out on the latest Doooood look:)

Hmm a lots to do with style i think ;)

I wear a berghaus baselayer on top of my wetty as i dont trust my harness.. Scared it will damage my new wetty. I dont wear shorts though

Style ;)

i wear boardies over my suit ever since i took a good arse slide launching and almost put a hole in my £100+ wetsuit, thankfully the neoprene wasn't punctured, but i'd much rather lose a cheap £5 pair of shorts than my expensive suit:cool:

i'd look good with fully rubber clad buttocks anyway so it can't be style:rolleyes:

thinks as a surfer is a bit hard to fathom why people would wear shorts over a wetty - since as a surfer all you want from a wetty is better manouverability and flex - so why mess it up with shorts?

coming from a surfing background myself, i cant see the benefits of wearing shorts - stuck getting drilled by waves with your kite getting smashed in the impact zone after a stack - the last thing you want is more drag as you try to swim to save your kite/self/dignity

windchill? kitesurfing is so much warmer than regular surfing (as long as you are powered) plenty of days i have kitesurfed for several hours when regular surfing would have frozen me - so not sure there either about the whole warmth tip

but a lot of guys who visit the beaches to kitesurf round here do wear shorts still

i think a lot of people with a surfing background would find it hard to indentify with people who wear shorts over a wetsuit for reasons of protection...

...taking off (regular surfing) on a reef sucking nearly dry the last thing on your mind would be wetsuit chafe

Thanks- I can now see why some one might wear shorts to protect an expensive suit but don't understand the wind chill thing- I've found that the drier the outside of a suit is, the warmer it is which is why I have a single lined suit for windsurfing and a double lined suit for surfing. I've also never had a harness chaff a suit- maybe I've always been blessed with quality kit. Some of the suits and harness's (harnesses??) I've seen on the market recently are rubbish..( Snugg makes the best suits IMHO)

er yes had to to the swim thing with the raf where you jump in in a pair of coveralls and then turn it ito a floatation aid, works quite well really.

the wind chill thing for me is when stood on the beach trying to get the circulation back into my fingers (so i can go out again) hopefully a small lottery win will let me get a drysuit for next winter :D

i wear shorts primarily to save my wetty (its pretty much shot now anyway)

i cant see many situaltions when surfing or windsurfing where you might take a quick drag up a beach. neoprene seens to survive a bit better with a pair of light trousers or shorts over them.

err....... well spot the windsurfer in this picture.

Lol........

Why do windsurfers spent so much more time on the beach than riding? all the guys i ride with want to get out as soon as they can and stay out for as long as they can......But the windsurfers turn up and sit on the beach waiting for "the right conditions".

Sorry not meaning to hijack this thread.....I wear shorts over my wetsuit for protecting the suit...my shorty is wearing thin frommy local stony beach.
