monkeyinshower Posted March 1, 2005 Report Posted March 1, 2005 Hi, I am helping a friend choose his first power kite. Could anyone recommend a good kite that will be used in the following way?: 1) On beach in South of France - often 30mph windspeeds. 2) Back in UK over summer - so not too bad with lower windspeeds 3) Can be used for scudding and small jumps (2 - 3 feet). 4) Not be liable to get overpowered and out of control 5) Heavyweight rider (100kg) 6) less than £300 I've looked at the Bullet and Samuria? do you reckon I'm on the right track? if so what sizes? if not what others? Thanks very much Quote
craig.w1599968638 Posted March 1, 2005 Report Posted March 1, 2005 30mph winds are way to much for flying in if its your first kite! you would only want something very small like a 1.5 bullet ..and it would be SOOOO fast, i would not teach someone to fly in 30mph winds that then brings me onto UK light wind summers? a kite that can be used in 30 mph will not be any good in summer light winds! any size kite will scud you and jump you in the right strength wind...for example a 1,5m bullet would scud you in 30mph winds! you will be well powered maybe slightly over depends on your skill with a 1.5m bullet in 30mph winds so your comment on a kite that wont over power you again depends on the wind speed but you are on the right track with a bullet or a sammy for the first kite... you just wont get one thats good for 30mph & light summer winds, you will need one kite for strong winds (small) and something bigger for light winds Hi, I am helping a friend choose his first power kite. monkeyinshower Posted March 1, 2005 Author Report Posted March 1, 2005 Well the first time I flew a kite as a 3.5m2 in 30mph winds, that was what got me hooked in the 1st place. Looking back though, was a bit crazy - just a case of being dragged along a field! So for safety's sake i'll advise he get something smaller for the high winds then and another for the UK if he gets on with it. Thanks for your help anyway Quote
dmb Posted March 1, 2005 Report Posted March 1, 2005 Couple of weekends ago I was being lofted a couple of feet in 30-32mph (measured) by my Blade II 2.0m, and I'm over 90kgs. I also broke 25mph in the buggy the same day/same conditions/same kite, and if I was any good could probably have doubled that at least I wouldn't like to have been learning at the time ... Quote
Active-8 Posted March 1, 2005 Report Posted March 1, 2005 ive just been over on the inventohq site and they have a 2mtr 2 line on a small bar that is rates for a big wind range from low winds to big winds, they recone in big winds it will pull you along. i was impressed with the write up im going to order one for my wife for mothersday:D look nice and come with a sholderpack, lines and bar. something 200 its called. this is in no way a plug as i have had a lot of problems with the beamers but if the price is right then i will get one. dont want to spend loads on her or she will think im after something;) All the best. GaRRy Posted March 1, 2005 Report Posted March 1, 2005 Why do we keep saying light British winds. We are the windiest country in Europe Any way to answer the questions 1) On beach in South of France - often 30mph windspeeds. As already said 30 Mph is way to much for a begineer. if its that wind do something else at least until got the experience 2) Back in UK over summer - so not too bad with lower windspeeds See Above 3) Can be used for scudding and small jumps (2 - 3 feet). this will depend on the wind speed no single kite will cover all wind speeds. 4) Not be liable to get overpowered and out of control You wish. No such kite exists if your flying a kite for x wind and it sudenly increases you need the expereince to say stuff this and let go (Hence why 30 mph winds are not a good idea for a begineer) 5) Heavyweight rider (100kg) Weight eventually has little to do with it (although it helps) expereince is far more important. You will see some very small flyers handling massive kites while someone else far bigger will be struggling with something far smaller. 6) less than £300 Shouldnt be a problem. Plenty of kites around for that price. I would suggest something in the 2.5 to 4 meter range. Some to consider (in all price ranges). Buster,Bullet,Samari,Little Devil. Just avoid high aspect ratio ones to start with (long and thin) Quote

It was windy David. I was fighting with my 3.5 and that loon out ran us all with his 5.5 Bee!! ..on his belly and trying to jump with it. Lucky he couldn't and we did try and persuade him not to fly it Quote
Zimbo Posted March 7, 2005 Report Posted March 7, 2005 For yr friend i would probalby say a bullet 1.5 or 2.5. My first kite was a bullet 1.5 and i got on fine with it. It has a bit of pull in lighter winds but in stronger winds will send u scudding and u should be jumping a few feet. A 1.5 is pritty quick though. Hope this helps. Quote
FO Kite Posted March 7, 2005 Report Posted March 7, 2005 Ditto Zimbo Saturday we had genuine (windmeter) 30mph winds gusting 38mph and a 1.5 Bullet was the star of the day. Plenty of power for a buggy blast.....harness required unless you want to stretch your arms:D F/O Kite Quote
