Bigal Posted January 4, 2005 Report Posted January 4, 2005 i would just like to take the time tell you all about my recetent day with the blade!!!! I was at the west sands in st andrews and having a lot of fun with the 3m sami but decided to get the 4.9 blade out. It was flying fine for about 20 mins but then all of a sudden a gust pulled me right off the ground and dumped me straight back down. I landed bad and snapped my femur. I've spent the last 9 days in hospital in dundee with the parents having to travel from glasgow to visit. They put in a 38cm steel pin in me femr so its all good now. Its gonna be a long time before im walking and flying again. Just a quick word of warning.......TAKE CARE WITH THE 4.9!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Quote
fly boy benny Posted January 4, 2005 Report Posted January 4, 2005 these babys will always give everybody a sound kicking! Quote

Good luck with the leg, just wait til you have the cast taken off and you have one normal leg and one scrawny twig! I busted my ankle a few years back (not from kiting though) Quote

tttonyyy1599968643 Posted January 4, 2005 Report Posted January 4, 2005 Ouch. The femur is supposed to be the strongest bone in the body. Count your blessings it wasn't spinal damage! Good luck with your recovery mate, it must be gutting to not be able to go out flying. tttonyyy Quote
Cahliss Posted January 4, 2005 Report Posted January 4, 2005 That's a big Ouch! Real big bumm.r on the flying. Had a similar incident where I was hooked in resting with my BladeI 4.9 and was boosted so I was looking down at the top of the goalposts but managed to spring land go forward onto me knee pads. Mean machines that can catch you out when not looking. get well and flying soon Quote

Mal1599968600 Posted January 5, 2005 Report Posted January 5, 2005 Commiserations for having to suffer Ninewells, the leg thing sounds nasty to The guys on the (old) St Andrews were asking for you. Pop along to the new St Andrews thread and try claiming a free prescription for Jaffa Cakes. Take it easy and do what nursey says. Quote
Dymar Posted January 5, 2005 Report Posted January 5, 2005 4.9 widowmaker, i know of more people who have hurt them selve with this kite than any other. moves to fast & has to much lift, one second of inatention and bang........... dymar Quote

Tonster Posted January 5, 2005 Report Posted January 5, 2005 4.9 widowmaker, i know of more people who have hurt them selve with this kite than any other. moves to fast & has to much lift, one second of inatention and bang........... dymar This is mainly due to the fact that the 4.9 is one of the most popular kites there are out there. In my experience it also has the best windrange for the wind we seem to get in this country. And also when the wind is slightly higher or gusting people still think that they can hold this kite down. You have to know your limits and when your'e nearing them. A gust could be as little as 3 or 4 mph more than the wind your flying in but that can be enough to send you skyward. Quote
Mal1599968600 Posted January 5, 2005 Report Posted January 5, 2005 That and they tend to be popular with a certain personality type that is probably an accident waiting to happen;) Quote
Bob Monkhouse Posted January 5, 2005 Report Posted January 5, 2005 Hope you heal soon BigAl. I know how it feels to be incapacitated. Just do as your told on your recovery and work hard on the physio. Wheelchair buggying is fun but obviously not recommended. Best regards, Bob. Quote
abbe89 Posted January 5, 2005 Report Posted January 5, 2005 i hope you get better soon, but i love my 4.9 Blade3!! i get on really well with it, especially when it's set up on a bar!! Quote
Bigal Posted January 5, 2005 Author Report Posted January 5, 2005 Thanks for all the kind words guys. It's not all that sore sitting about but i need to get moving and get on with the stretches. Hopefully won't be out for too long. The crutches are great though, can't wait to cover them in stickers and sray them Quote
Ted Posted January 5, 2005 Report Posted January 5, 2005 B - Thanks for the warning about your accident. Can we have a little more info about what led up to it? Wind speed, gust range, site, your level of experience etc? I think that might helps others avoid the same fate or worse. It's important to learn from mishaps. Ted Quote
conor Posted January 5, 2005 Report Posted January 5, 2005 hi i was flying my blade ii up on the grass and all of a sudden my dad tells me someones broken their leg. the wind was quite strange that day and quite gusty. hope you make a quick full recovery and keep flying! Quote
.TheBeest. Posted January 6, 2005 Report Posted January 6, 2005 I nearly broke my leg last year with the 4.9 but i got lucky get well soon dude Quote
flydad Posted January 6, 2005 Report Posted January 6, 2005 Hey Big Al, bad luck mate! hope your recovery is painless and quick. You do realise you've at last broken the West coast duck, so far just about every thing has happened on the west coast and Crosshouse Hospital has been well used to date, nice to see it getting shared around the other health services . At least you should be well healed by the time the warmer weather comes in Tom Quote
mick Posted January 6, 2005 Report Posted January 6, 2005 I know its not the thread for this really but the Blade doesnt create the damage. My mate broke his femur with a 2.1 LD. I crushed 2 vertibrae resulting in paralysis of one arm with a 6mtre ld. Severe concussion with a 2.2 Elliot. Since Ive flown Blades, no accidents at all. I learnt respect for one thing. I think Blade flyers maybe do push the limit a bit more than most other kiters. Maybe I said. Good luck with the recovery. Quote
Filthy Posted January 6, 2005 Report Posted January 6, 2005 Pictures gotta have pictures!!! Get well soon!! Quote
