hiya everyone, thinking of comming to roundhay sometime, where is the best place to park and fly? not that familure with Roundhay. Do you have a streetmap link?

I have heard there is a restiction on traction kiting at Roundhay Park. I cannot remember if boarding or buggying or possibly are banned. Is this a new rule?

 

I was boarding down there last summer a fair few times at weekends and there was nearly always at least 1 or 2 other guys boarding.

 

I was never told I couldn't ride there by anyone.

 

Hoping to try out York racecourse when the weather/light evenings returns and I decide which new kite to buy (anyone local got a Venom, Phantom or Psycho2 I can try out )and I have found Pontefract racecourse to be worth the drive from Leeds.

If you drive up the main road through the park heading North (from Leeds centre) most people ride on the open park area on your right, you can just park along the main road. Best to pick somewhere in the middle cos it is surrounded by trees.

there is nothing written that I can find that says boarding or buggying is banned at Roundhay, I've been many times with a few other kiters there. lovekylie, do you have anything documented anywhere from Leeds council?

 

However it seems to sit in a "dip" and the wind is pretty gusty!

the rumour has it that the bylaw states no vehicles on the park with more than 2 wheels. though i have never seen any thing written or found any signs around the park. I've met a few kites who have known people who have been asked to move on by the rangers (not met some one who has actually been moved on), and i've met kiters who have sat and chatted with the rangers while they've been out bording with out been asked to stop. i've buggied up there many times my self with out a problem. apparently the deciding factor is the jimmy saville factor. the old git has an apartment in the middle of the park and likes to call the rangers so they have to be seen to be doing some thing, if he's out of the area then you stand a better chance of been left alone.

 

the wind is pretty gusty but it is possible to get a good session if it swings the right way ( might be southerly but i can't remember for sure) if your heading up drop me a pm and i'll head up.

I actually sent a request for info on kiting at Roundhay to Leeds Council and received the following reply:

 

Dear Sir,

 

The use of kites at Roundhay Park is fine, but I do have to say that some of the kites available are on the large size and do give me concerns for the safety of those using the kites and other park users.

 

With regard to boards and buggies, I cannot condone the use of these in a public place.

So, all in all, when alls said and done, crossing the t's dotting the i's, letting bygones be bygones........Dave Morgan is about as useful as a chocolate firegaurd.

As far as I know the only time you can't ride there is when there is a race meeting but as they don't seem to have many meetings there, most of the time is fine.

Looks like they ask for members only to ride up there now. I'm sure if you wanted to just check it out they won't kick you off the first time as they all seem like good guys up there. If you like it then £10 a year won't break the bank and it helps them pay the council/racecourse for permission to ride there so you won't ever get rangers or the public telling you not to ride as they pay for the privilege to ride there.

So whilst he can't condone the use of buggies/boards he doesn't say they are banned!

 

However we need to use some common sense if the park is packed on a sunny Sunday with wind, I guess we should all be extra careful and consider not flying.

That is indeed the place. The spot most often used for kiting is the field covered by the 2 blue "P" signs on the map you linked.

may be, but i've not seen many dirt surfers in leeds, i'm just going to keep buggying, though admittedly i spend more time on the beach than i do in the park.

 

also just out of curiosity, how long have you had your dirt surfer? based on you age and location i think i may have bumpped into you dad on bedquilts fields a while back.

Hopefully the club will be a bit more successful as we now know what we're doing, rather than bumbling along like we did last year .

yup that sounds like the guy i met.

 

Tinshill top tends to get a bit more wind than bed quilts, but has alot more houses and people wandering about so keep an eye on your kit. also be a bit carefull if the wind is blowing towards the road, last thing you want is to get lofted into traffic.

sadly out of the possibles roundhay os probably one of the better ones, unless you can find a private field some where that you can get access to. Have to admit its been quite a while since i've flown inland at all, the beach just has too much draw these days. Once you guys get every one back together you need to get a beach trip organised, east cost is only about 75miles from leeds.

As of th end of september i will no longer be a northerner (even if i will always be at heart!). Moving as far southward as i can go for uni and th joys of decent flying sites.

Havent met many of you, but i hope u all continue to enjoy flying

which uni are you going to? and do you drive/have a car. though leeds does have some workable flying sites, most of the better ones require a bit of travel.
