Spartan1599968628 Posted May 19, 2004 Report Posted May 19, 2004 I think this has been discussed before but I cant find the thread using the search function so apologies for the repetition! Does anyone know an internet retailer that sells climbing rope by the metre? I'm trying to make a strop so will only need about 3m or so. (Want to make 2 at different lenghts). Cheers in advance, Paul Quote
gingerob19 Posted May 19, 2004 Report Posted May 19, 2004 I got mine from a cotswold shop they sell it by the meter. http://www.cotswold-outdoor.com/index.jphtml?referrer=BWTD Quote
oc1rob Posted May 19, 2004 Report Posted May 19, 2004 1/2m per strop roughly 3m would make you 5 or so by my calculations. Its always good to have spare though! Quote
dmb Posted May 19, 2004 Report Posted May 19, 2004 Local hardware store - Homebase etc. all sell 5mm rope that works fine, also PVC tubing. Quote
Spartan1599968628 Posted May 19, 2004 Author Report Posted May 19, 2004 Should I try and stick to a thinner diametre rope? Will 10mm be too thick? Quote
dmb Posted May 19, 2004 Report Posted May 19, 2004 Should be fine - depending on material, breaking strain, stiffness, slippiness etc. I think the stuff I use (from Focus) is 8mm multibraid polyethylene about a quid a metre ? Quote
HD462 Posted May 19, 2004 Report Posted May 19, 2004 Be careful with the stuff from the likes of Focus and B&Q. It has a very low breaking strain (see label on the drum), and is more expensive than the good stuff. If you have a yacht chandlers nearby try there. I use 4mm Sprintline 16 plait pre-stretched polyester line (I was thinking it was 700lb dyneema, but just had the brochure out) made by English Braids. It's rated at a breaking strain of 550kg (1210lb). The lines will go before that will, although like any, it does wear out fairly quick when used with a hook. Quote
Dibz Posted May 19, 2004 Report Posted May 19, 2004 for serious wear and tear resistance your best bet will be climbing rope... might be expensive tho' even for just a few metres... i would say 10mm will be too thick though... if you are using a spreader bar you don't really want to go much thicker than 8mm imo... most single rope climbing ropes don't go much thinner than 9mm, but what you are after a double-rope rope will work just fine... 6-7mm i would think cotswold outdoor are good, and as was said earlier, sell stuff by the metre, nevisport often have some rope by the metre, and needlesports might be worth a look (although i don't know if they sell by the metre) the other thing to maybe look at would be windsurfing harness lines...
