If you're talking about the new comp16pro or the airdeck, then I honestly don't think there's much competition; it's got to be the comp16.

More stable at speed, more flex, more pop, stronger trucks, stronger deck, better bindings, better tyres, lighter hubs...

The 2003 comp is one of the best boards available.

have to agree with that, of all the boards I have ridden this is definately the best, but then it's twice the price of the Airdeck - how much money do you want to part with...?

I use an airdeck and really like it. Ive only compared it to the kheo boards though (the flyer and air-s) so i cant really say how it compares to the comp16. Its best features are its short and light so jumping it round is easy when you are starting out, and makes for easy slides and transitions. But, it does struggle to hold power, probably because the deck is quite high and encourages the board to slide. Its also not built for high speed stability, and at first I found it was prone to speed wobbles until i got used to really leaning off it, now i never have any trouble.

As for quality/longevity - again im not sure compared to the comp16, but it is a lot cheaper so id expect parts to be of a lesser quality. However, ive used mine all summer at the beach (more or less weekly) and have washed it down with freshwater and teflon lubricant after each time - still feels like new.

If he wants to do some downhilling, the airdeck probably isnt a good choice. It has smaller diameter wheels than most boards, so doesnt ride the bumps as well. Its also a kite-specific design, which is great for going upwind but i doubt works too well doing downhill since you are slightly off-centre.

Just my thoughts, hope this helps!

Hi as mentioned drop me a line on spooky@oxfree.com will be able to give you some good advice on both boards and may be able to sort you out with a used (nearly new) Com Pro 16.

If flying a Frenzy the Air deck is not such a good choice IMHO as Frenzys do like to be powered up so nice fast run in's work best.

Also opinions seem to be split on the Airdeck, both interms of truck strengths and whether there is a need for an off set stance to go up wind?

Yes they are great for tricks, but have seen peopel doing just as well on standard boards.

Also if he does not get on with the Airdeck, due to either the offset stance or the Convex deck (points your toes at funny angels, well does mine), it is to late, it really is a 50/50 chance?

If you don't wish to spend as much as a Comp 16 costs, then get my old favorite, the Air-S. He will not go wrong with one of those, scores well in all areas/test and at the very worse he will like it.

Also is a great downhill board.

Comp Pro 16 though is still the best alround board I have ridden.

Have fun, Jon

just one thing,

spooky its not the trucks that are weak on the airdeck, its that the deck is really stiff which means the trucks take a right battering

the comp 16 pro is THE BEST available at the moment. my only concern would be that at 13 he may not have the bulk to really throw a matrix truck into a proper turn.

im around 10 stone and i have trouble with channel trucks, i find it a real chore to make a turn.

mind you our comp is set up with yellow eggs in

i prefer skate trucks myself, and i ride a kheo air-s. which i would say is probably the best board out there for that amount of money. especially the limited edition one, the tyres and hubs are great andthe deck has a lot of pop.

personally i'd save a bit of cash for when he gets a bit bigger.

Hi,

Yes your dead right about the trucks (it came up in another thread, I was the one that put forward the idea about lack of flex ment no impact absorbtion).

Yes you are also right that the Air-S is probelly the best deck for kite (and lightweight downhilling) in that price range. Rode one for two years and think it is ace, Ok may not be the best in certain areas, but then again it does not score badly in any, making it a very good alround board.

Comp Pro 16, like most modern Channel Truck boards has two spring postions, inside for quick carve (light weights) out side for powered up (people like me :)). Plus you have the option to put the elasomers in (go for the Scrub ones, only a couple of quid compared to MBS at over a tenner!! does same thing). Between these two you can set up teh board just right. So light weights and fatties can ride teh sam eboard no worries. Also the Comp Pro 16 has easy adjustable useing teh allen key, so you don't have to keep taking it apart etc. I set up my heel side dead tight so I can lean back and power up, but keep deck level. With toe side set soft for quick down wind turns/toeside.

Ahve to say the bindings are great for kiting with as well :)

So I agree if budget is around the £180 get the Air-S, especially if you can get the Lt Edition, 8" Primo tires and hubs (and as Primo hubs they will take up grades to 9" if you wish?).

But if you have very nice parents that will get you one, get a Comp Pro 16, same weight as an Air-S but with Channel truck performance, stronger & more responsive deck (ie nice flex with not to an aggresive return which would other wise throw you off).

Have fun all, Jon

P.s Dispite all that, mine may be up for sale?

What about an MBS Core 16 - Cheaper brother of the Comp16 but still far superior to the AIR-S in my opinion.

Similar handling characteristics to the Comp but just slightly heavier - a top notch board for the money!
