sprogg Posted May 21, 2003 Report Posted May 21, 2003 tethered flying is exremely dangerous and not advisable. it is unlikely you will ever see it donr-except on the flexi-video. It is wfhere the flyer is attached by aharness to the ground and to the kite. the idea is that the flyer is lifted off the ground and continues to flt the kite. Not advisable as the power can drop and so will you. A recent death from jumping highlights the dangers of being dropped when flying using a kite. Tethered flying is said to the most dangerous type of extreme kiting. Don't do it unless you are a trained idiot/fool. Quote
Joelio Posted May 21, 2003 Report Posted May 21, 2003 Tying youself to something whilst flying a kite so you can't get pulled away from a certain spot more than the rope will let you - usually you are tied to a harness, this is VERY dangerous. See this thread here: http://www.flexifoil.com/community/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=13945 Quote
psychotic_eddy Posted May 21, 2003 Report Posted May 21, 2003 1. Very dangerous if you do not know what you are doing. 2. Very dangerous if you do not have the right equipment. 3. Very dangerous if people with you do not know what they are doing. 4. Very dangerous to people around you if either of you don't know what you or they are doing. 5. Very dangerous. Basically attach yourself to a BIG Kite with a harness, attach harness to ground (preferably a backup team of 3 or 4 people who know exactly what they are doing) with a length of very strong rope. You then 'hang' in midair anything from a few feet from the ground to 30 or 40 feet off the ground. This should only be done when there is a strong STEADY WIND, that is also predictable ??? Please note that should something go wrong, anything go wrong at all you WILL hit the ground either at the speed dictated by gravity, or worse at the speed dictated by an out of control kite. Please do not attempt this without acquiring the requisite knowledge and a team to help who should also know exactly what to do and when. If this is attempted FULL safety gear should be worn at all times, and make sure someone knows exactly where to ask the ambulance to come, as even after taking all precautions accidents do and will happen. Just imagine what happens if a line breaks when you are that high from the ground!!!!!!!! Quote
psychotic_eddy Posted May 21, 2003 Report Posted May 21, 2003 hmmm nice one joel. I will have to work out how to post those thread links!!!!!! everytime I try it it goes wrong! see this thread Wa - Hey it worked. Quote
Joelio Posted May 21, 2003 Report Posted May 21, 2003 Nice one ed;) Just copy and paste the actual URL in, you don't need the tags at all if it starts with http it will automatically link it - oh and it's easier to do that too! I was thinking of trying teathered flying sometime, now i am thinking of not trying it - sounds way too daft, and i'd rather not break legs and maybe even die doing it - way too dangerous, and i'm still too much of a newbie!!!!!!!!!!!!! psychotic_eddy Posted May 21, 2003 Report Posted May 21, 2003 Have tried the tethered flying but did it at the coast. Had the guys on the rope stood on the beach and flew over the water, thought it would make a softer landing. It gave us something to try on a day when the wind was offshore. Even then we found that if things go wrong you can still hit terra firma from those heights even if it is under about 5 or 6 feet of water. I don't think I would trust myself to do this over dry land, unless the heights were kept fairly low, and if that is the case then why tether? if your only going up 10 feet just use the kite. Quote
Joelio Posted May 21, 2003 Report Posted May 21, 2003 Wise words - but must hurt a bit if you hit the floor thru the sea, altho i guess the water must break your fall! Would only ever try it over the sea come to think of it - but even then i'd be skeptikal. What about jumping huge heights - on beach or land, what if you get too high and have no real control of the kite - what would you do then, just hold on and pray that the wind doesn't die down too much (especially with a gust)?????????? Especially if you are like 10ft and climbing..........?? Quote
HD462 Posted May 21, 2003 Report Posted May 21, 2003 I broke my toe last summer hitting the seabed. I was bodyboarding and got wiped out by a big wave and hit off the bottom. I still managed another couple of hours, but my foot swelled up big time later on....couldn't get me shoe on...lol First broken bone ever....lol Quote
