Guest 503-king Posted May 14, 2003 Report Posted May 14, 2003 I was just wondering if onyone has ever tried this before. I saw a guy on the beach a few days ago and it looked like all he was using was a snowboard. I know that they have boards specifically made for the sand, so maybe it was one of those. Anyway it looked like fun and just wanted any info about it if possible. Quote
Paul Beatham Posted May 14, 2003 Report Posted May 14, 2003 I’ve tried it a couple of times without much success, I managed to board for about 9 feet. But that was before I started mountainboarding, so not much experience. The problem with a sandboarding is that you don’t have anything to edge with, except the edge of the board, which isn’t the easiest think to dig into the sand. Having said that I am going to give it another try, there's a great beach near to where I say, there’s plenty of space for flying, even when the tide is in, and there’s not to many people about either, the only problem is that the sand is very soft, so its not the best place to go mountainboarding, so I will be taking the sandboard and kite out, and give it a try this weekend if the wind is right. Cheers Paul Quote
Greenman Posted May 14, 2003 Report Posted May 14, 2003 I have just got a second hand snow bord for £20 and will be at sounton sands at the weekend giving it a go over the dunes. hope it works and i dont just fall on my ass all the time. i will let u all now how it gets on . Quote
jocook Posted May 14, 2003 Report Posted May 14, 2003 if you have time check out the Big Dune at Braunton Burrows ....it is mega I've been sandboarding there!! Ace! http://www.surf-wax.co.uk/sports/sandboards/braunton_burrows.htm Quote
Dorian Posted March 4, 2007 Report Posted March 4, 2007 We have just launched the first (as far as We know, please correct us if you know different) sandboard site in the U.K, http://www.sand-board.co.uk We will have a full range of sandboards and wax in stock within a week or 2, if everyone could take a look at the site and pm me what you think that would be great. domdino Posted March 6, 2007 Report Posted March 6, 2007 I tried sandboarding a few weeks ago here in Los Angeles It kinda worked, i used a CORE8 deck only - need something a bit bigger like a snowboard but i got cruising a few times heh, was fun anyway but its easy to end up on your ass... sand is the hardest surface to carve - this makes it really good practice for kite surfing! sflinux Posted March 6, 2007 Report Posted March 6, 2007 I want to make a board like this. There are days at my beach when riding with a mountain board doesn't work at high tide (though I just acquired a board with 12" tires). And I don't have the storage or transport capacity for a buggy. But this kind of board looks like fun: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vKpLs2SakLw&mode=user&search= http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5pm4QtwpyKk&mode=user&search= http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ivPapz1E6sE&mode=user&search= http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EjUEVy6BHXQ&mode=user&search= Quote
domdino Posted March 6, 2007 Report Posted March 6, 2007 hmm interesting - looks a lot like a standard kite board... Yeah i can't use my mountain board in anything other than low tide around here need something that will work on the soft sand where abouts are you sflinux? Quote
domdino Posted March 7, 2007 Report Posted March 7, 2007 Just saw this post was originally nearly 4 years old!!! Sheesh! Quote
faster4_tec Posted March 7, 2007 Report Posted March 7, 2007 yeah that damn water comes in and makes the sand soggy as anything. the only local beach that allows wind powered vehicles is ALWAYS soft as its relativly flat Quote
brassneck Posted March 7, 2007 Report Posted March 7, 2007 question..... I know it looks cool and all that, but 'puts on conservation hat' ... should we really be boarding down dunes, I know what you are saying about not touching the grass, but isnt the point that you are pushing sand down the dune and erroding it? that cant be good? all I am saying is that, on the whole us kiters are a carefull bunch, we try and make sure local councils dont have any ammunition to start looking at possible bans. would it not be better to promote this sport as kiting for soft sand beaches? you know, when / where its not hard enough to landboard. anyway.. just my 2p worth Quote
Kaskazi Posted March 7, 2007 Report Posted March 7, 2007 Just following on from Brassneck, as an ecologist and a kiter this has just occured to me. Please try and find out if there are either Natterjack Toads or Sand Lizards in the sand/dunes where you're going. These two species have full European and UK conservation legislation. They are also endangered species within the UK. Firstly, purely from trying to avoid injuring/killing them or their habitat. Secondly, if you do and are found guilty*, prosecution can be £2000 per animal and up to 6 months imprisonment! *You'd be surprised how 'grassy' joe public can be about these issues, especially if they're anti-kiting in their area! Jay DeMerit Posted March 22, 2007 Report Posted March 22, 2007 Just saw this post was originally nearly 4 years old!!! Sheesh! So it is! The guy who brought it back up was advertising his sand board business and probably searched for any threads related to sand boards, even if they are 4 years old! Quote
