Adrunpants Posted December 19, 2002 Report Posted December 19, 2002 Well my buggy has done over 70 mph in very little wind with my blade 7.2 quite easily and not kidding !!! Quote
Adrunpants Posted December 19, 2002 Report Posted December 19, 2002 I forgot to mention that both my buggy & kite were in the boot of my car at the time ! Quote
Guest gubber Posted December 19, 2002 Report Posted December 19, 2002 Motorola have developed a complete GPS chipset on one chip which they have started to produce it for less than $9 a time. This is for next gen mobiles so you can have location reported when you ring 999. But this should mean that GPS systems will become cheaper in the near future. Quote
jungletommy Posted December 27, 2002 Author Report Posted December 27, 2002 theres a sale going on . if you buy the etrax legen, there a 50.00 rebate. Quote
sjoh Posted December 29, 2002 Report Posted December 29, 2002 GPS receivers are FAR MORE accurate than bike speedos. On average, I get an accuracy of 15feet whilst locked on to 8 satellites on the beach. It can however get a few feet better than this even (when tracking 12 satellites). As for bike speedos, they are inaccuate in several ways, including: you can never get the wheel circumference measured exactly; your wheels may well spend a significant amount of time off the ground (therefore slowing their revs). Also, they're far less durable, many are water resistant and not waterproof (the basic etrex is waterproof), cordless ones are unreliable in that they sufferinterference and have a very short range. If what you're saying about GPS speed measurments being inaccurate due to this 15feet discrepancy is true, then surely you would expect your receiver to give a speed reading when stationary - this DOES NOT happen. The error occurs in absolute measurment of global position, not in measurment of velocity. In my experience, I only need to take one or two steps (from being stationary), in orded for my etrex to register that I'm moving, and for it to record an accurate and reliable speed (cos I know how fast I walk). Furthermore, a relative of mine has a light aircraft, and has shown me that GPS receivers can plot speeds as accurately as their fancy aviation tools. The reason GPS receivers are not used as a primary navigation tool is that the SA (selective availability) can be switched on by the US Government at ANY time, and so could therefore put pilots relying on GPS alone at risk. RedShift1599968581 Posted February 2, 2004 Report Posted February 2, 2004 SA has been off for a long time now. They didn't even switch it on during the latest Iraq war. Plus when WAAS (or the European equivelent) comes on later this year the accuracy will increase. But at the end of the day its a cost Vs worth issue. Does it really matter if you buggy speedo is out a little? Quote
Jonesing4Wind Posted February 2, 2004 Report Posted February 2, 2004 have a bike speedoon my buggy for 6 months, andno probs. After saying that, I still want a GPS. Was out on a rather large frozen lake, kiteskiing, and got turned around. MILES OF WALKING IN SNOW BOOTS is no fun, (huge blisters!!) next will be a GPS, for sure!!! Quote
