Dennis3131 Posted November 22, 2011 Report Posted November 22, 2011 Reading this on my new iMac. Got it last thursday. just got fed up with Windows. my laptop was about 10 years old (Alienware) Quote
The Geoff Posted November 22, 2011 Report Posted November 22, 2011 Just remember that you still need to backup important stuff! Even if the OS is the best you could possibly write, hard drives will still fail! On average you've got about 5 years. Quote

Even if the OS is the best you could possibly write, hard drives will still fail! On average you've got about 5 years. Or if you splash out and buy one of Apples Time Machine backup devices, about 19 months and 20 days (Statistics | Time Capsule Memorial Register). I do think that Apple have sorted this now by checking each one they sell for the potentially faulty batch of power supplies. Quote
eLuSiVeMiTe Posted November 23, 2011 Report Posted November 23, 2011 Macs are PCs... Remember that a Mac will also run Windows, Linux, Solaris and just about anything else, so even if you don't like OSX you can run something else. I once had a Mac running OSX with a virtual box running Linux with a virtual box running Windows which was emulating an Atari ST. Why? Hell, why not. Or vice versa u can install osx on a pc with a little bit of research. Build and spec my own comps cheaper in the long run always found macs on the pricey side for what ya get. Oh. I own a iPhone and iPad so I'm not anti apple just prefer a pc for desktop. But I'm a gamer and produce music as a hobby. A lot of my software/interfaces are best run in windows. Quote
Kite Kid Posted November 23, 2011 Report Posted November 23, 2011 Seing as now you already have a mac, No need for me to tell you to get one but try RAM Memory Upgrade: Dell, Mac, Apple, HP, Compaq. USB drives, SSD at Crucial.com for ram and ssd upgrades Got 8 gig of ram for my macbook and it was sooo much cheaper then apple was offering. Also find a student to by your mac for you as it's cheap Quote
Blademeat Posted November 24, 2011 Report Posted November 24, 2011 So Darren what did you decide in the end? Quote
vtrdaz Posted November 24, 2011 Author Report Posted November 24, 2011 So Darren what did you decide in the end? We decided Mac - we're just deciding on the spec now before we order. Thanks for all the info chaps Darren Quote
Dennis3131 Posted November 25, 2011 Report Posted November 25, 2011 Black friday today, if i waited a week would of got £81 off. Quote
Lolage Posted November 25, 2011 Report Posted November 25, 2011 Doing Graphic Design @ university and they all use macs. I however cant stand them, I will be buying a windows laptop to use at uni to boycott using the macs. Cant stand them. Quote
The Geoff Posted November 25, 2011 Report Posted November 25, 2011 Wow. Good luck with the graphic design career! That's a bit snarkier sounding than it's meant to be, what with the whole "macs are for creatives" thing being a myth, but given the high percentage of macs in the design industry it's well worth being fluent in using them, even if you never buy one. Knowing how to use unix "convert" command alone will save you a ridiculous amount of time. Oh, and anyone who uses "creative" as a noun should be shot in both elbows. Quote

Yeah I am aware that the design industry will use MACS. To be honest the only thing that does my head in with the ones at uni is that the mouse have no scroll wheel which is like loosing a finger when it comes to using programs such as photoshop. Also makes no sense why I have to hold down ctrl+click for right click?! The operating system does get on my tits after being a windows person my whole life but I suppose I could get used to it after a while... Quote
The Geoff Posted November 26, 2011 Report Posted November 26, 2011 Or....you know....buy a mouse with a scroll wheel and right button. They work on Macs these days Quote
GaRRy Posted November 26, 2011 Report Posted November 26, 2011 Or get a trackpad Why scroll when you can just flick a couple of fingers Quote
The Geoff Posted November 26, 2011 Report Posted November 26, 2011 If you get into 3D stuff you'll find the mantra is "one hand on the mouse, the other on the keyboard". For example, you can move an object left three units, up one and scale it up two times by using the mouse and menus, but it's far quicker (not to mention more accurate) to click and hit a few keyboard commands. The same goes for photoshop type stuff to a certain extent. Whether or not you need to hit CMD to get a right-click becomes fairly redundant, which I'd guess is why Macs took so long to get around to a right-click. Quote
vtrdaz Posted December 11, 2011 Author Report Posted December 11, 2011 OK chaps , Our Mac is due this week - do i need anti virus? i'm guessing i do so could anyone recommend some good Mac software - preferably free!!!! Cheers Darren Quote
rtz Posted December 11, 2011 Report Posted December 11, 2011 You don't need anti virus as you'll see first time you install something. Quote
The Geoff Posted December 11, 2011 Report Posted December 11, 2011 You can if you want - either to filter documents and emails you'll be passing to Windows users, or if you plan on destruction testing the machine on the dark corners of the internet, but for everyday personal use, no, you don't really need it. Farno Posted December 12, 2011 Report Posted December 12, 2011 We bought an iMac mini a few years ago. My Wife can hardly manage to work the DVD player but got to grips with an iMac in the first hour. Last year we decided to upgrade to a full iMac. We both used Windows for work and have a Windows laptop (this never gets used now just keeping it for the kids to play on) The wife also has an iPad and the cross plat form synch is fantastic. They are expensive but in my opinion worth the money, for integration of the software and cross platform synch. Quote
Lee_m Posted December 12, 2011 Report Posted December 12, 2011 Mac!! only because it turns on and off when you want it to lol Quote
