i have been using one of these for the last 2 seasons but reckon there is something better out there.

the jacket works well having the back of the harness inside the jacket (to stop snow balling up in the harness after some falls/drags) and yet allows the full spreader bar on the outside by using the 2 vent zips.

the only problem is that it isnt flexible so needs to be worn baggy so reckon a soft shell will be a better bet.

what do you use?

there are the velez and aspira smocks.

re wearing over you jacket - 2 issues.

1, harness rides up more due to more layers of clothing and smooth surface on outside of jacket.

2, if or when you take a tumble and get dragged a wee but snow collects between the top of your harness and your back and upon compression can become quite uncomfortable and is difficult or impossible to remove without taking your harness off.

If you want something with zips up the side so you can put your harness underneath there a a couple of jackets.

Best one is probably the Montane Resolute Smock or a slightly cheaper version would be the Extreme Smock.

They are both pile lined smock for winter mountain use... The Resolute is waterproof with a fixed hood whereas the Extreme is only water resistant.

One thing that might be useful is they both have a velcro strap that attaches to the front and back of the smock and goes between your legs to stop it riding up.

If you have anything against Montane... Buffalo do something similar called the Special 6 Shirt which, IMO, is not as good.

In the US Aaron has made "the kite panel"

The Kite Panel

it's a strip with zippers and an opening for a hook that you zip into any jacket (that you have spec'd for zipper matching). He was very forthcoming with info when first developing the idea and did a lot of research into different types of jackets and zippers used etc. He suggested to some people to make their own and eventually started to make them and sell them. So you might find this a useful project to make for yourself or save the trouble and check out what he will sell them for - perhaps best to order a few for shipping costs?

Anyway, just another option or inspiration for creative people.
