Stumpi Posted July 16, 2011 Report Posted July 16, 2011 Whats the go here then peeps. I'm taking the family down for 10 days towards the end of August and will of course take my gear with me. I'm guessing off the causeway in the lagoon is the normal spot, seen plenty going out there when I pass. Is there any type of weird council or local shop rule meaning I have to sign my kids away to fly there? An info would be helpful, nothing worse than getting there only to be told "its members only mate" Cheers Quote
lucie8uk Posted July 16, 2011 Report Posted July 16, 2011 Just to clarify, it's the harbour that you can kite in, not the lagoon between Portland Beach Road and Chesil Beach. The harbour is run by Portland port, and they require all vessels using the harbour to have a permit. Check http://www.wpksc.co.uk for details. Quote
lucie8uk Posted July 16, 2011 Report Posted July 16, 2011 Oh, and remember that the prevailing wind (southwest) is off shore. Pick low tide to give yourself a better chance of not needing to be rescued. Quote
smudge837 Posted July 16, 2011 Report Posted July 16, 2011 Hi Stumpi, As Lucie8 says best to get your tides right. and whatever you do stay well clear of the bridge when you are in the water. a few peeps have been sucked through on the flood tide. for the permit you can go and see Paracadamy on the left (go right round the round about) Portland end of the road. the place seems to be manned everyday, they have the skatepark as well. There is the car park at Ferry bridge end. at the moment they charge £5 for the days parking, a bit hit and miss if the cafe will be open. The guys running the new(ish) shop are really friendly and helpful guys all in all a good bunch down there. a few (lot) of the locals go to the Portland end of the road and park for free on the side approach to the sailing academy. I aint had the nerve to do that, i just pay the guys in the shop, depending on what time it is. i think it is free after 5pm. Dont be put off by the boulders, once you'r in the water the bottom is good sand and knee to waist deep a fair way out. you can pretty much see the line where the bottom dips away. have fun and hope you have a good trip.
