russ_kent Posted June 21, 2011 Report Posted June 21, 2011 I was confused by reflections from standing water on a very shallowly shelving beach with the tide on the way out (Camber at a certain stage of the tide) I thought I had space, I didn't. Realised I was going to land in 2 inches of water, kicked the board away forward, it embedded itself on it's side and then I landed on the side of it on the inside of my leg from about 10 foot up. Luckily my balls aren't as big as Arek's so I missed them, was so lucky I hit the muscle at the back which is quite fleshy, if it was the front of my leg I'd have broken it. For any newbies reading, this is an example of EXTREME STUPIDITY and as an experienced flyer I don't defend it, just posting the results as a warning! Most people don't want to do jumps too far out to sea for obvious reasons - if you mess it up and drop the kite, esp with the tide on it's way out you may struggle to recover your board. Obviously I understand why not to do it close to shore, had been trying to strike a balance. My balance was wrong! Beware the reflection of a recently dried beach, especially one with little bumps on it that keeps the same level for several hundred yards where it all dries out at once. Quote
Krazy Kiter Posted June 21, 2011 Report Posted June 21, 2011 oh, bet that hurt a lot. not a mistake you'll be making again i bet? I for one much perfer to jump in quite deep water, but anything over chest deep is usually ok. Quote
Easyrider Posted June 21, 2011 Report Posted June 21, 2011 oh yeah..... thats going to smart in the morning! hope you make a swift recovery and its good to see your sense of humour remained intact Luckily my balls aren't as big as Arek's so I missed themQUOTE] Quote
mau00149 Posted June 21, 2011 Report Posted June 21, 2011 ouch!!! all the best with the recovery Quote
Kite Kid Posted June 21, 2011 Report Posted June 21, 2011 (edited) Camber and greatstone can be quite deceiving, i had a little bail unhooked quite far out to sea at greatsone did't realise i was about 3 inches deep and ended up with 13 months of the water and a nice up to repair my shoulder hope you recover quickly bud Edited June 21, 2011 by Kite Kid Quote
Twisted Posted June 21, 2011 Report Posted June 21, 2011 Damn russ, thats not good. I've still not been out on the water yet, but do wonder why soo many people jump in shallow water. When sunny I guess polarized sunglasses would help with this deceiving glare. Hope it settles quickly. Quote
russ_kent Posted June 21, 2011 Author Report Posted June 21, 2011 Not here for sympathy boys but many thanks anyway, thought the photo would entertain!! Won't be doing shallow water tricks again! Didn't break the bone, all muscles in my right leg upwards are pretty much trashed and I can't lock the leg out any more for some reason. Will have a couple of weeks to let it fix, then see you out there :-) live fast die young (well, old actually) Quote
plummet Posted June 22, 2011 Report Posted June 22, 2011 Ouch. the joys of pushing the limits. Well since i jump the landboard over boulders i'm not too worried about shallow water. but i don't go super high or silly in under knee high water. it also depends on the kite too. you want a glide monster over land or shallow water. if the shit hits the fan just direct your kite in such a way you touch down at a stand still and battery smooth. 11 edge is good for this. c4...not so good, your more prone to land super hot. I had storm session a month ago that 25-40 knots 5m swell massive storm surges up and down the beach. was hooning into shore around 25mph and the storm surge sucked right out from under me going straight to sand. the board stopped dead I managed to jump out of the bindings slam the kite to the zenith and glide in for a running landing. Damn funny. But it could have been a pretty painfull face plant. Quote
russ_kent Posted June 22, 2011 Author Report Posted June 22, 2011 Believe. Was flying a 9 metre North Rhino and the wind/lift basically disappeared so the soft/glidey landing wasn't available no matter how much I powered up. I landboard too from time to time and that's how I started - but I stay lower on land now, find landings from on high (about 25 feet anyway) on water much softer and more controllable. Your last post though made me think about the time I had to pop over the little shipwreck that pops it's head out of Camber Sands twice a day - it's old, unmarked (unless you catch the first shards of old metal from the wheelhouse), razor sharp rusty metal, it appears and disappears depending on the time of your session relative to the tide! In fact I was thinking about it and trying to remember where it was when I stacked it and screwed my knee as per the photo Live and learn, reckon I'll be back on a board within the week! Plummet, I get sent around the world on work a fair bit, when I finally get the New Zealand trip I'll remember to bring some gear and come meet up with you, you're one of the people on this forum that speaks sense :-) Quote
plummet Posted June 22, 2011 Report Posted June 22, 2011 yeah i limit my height on land too 10 feet high max. i also run with the manta on land it seems to float you down no matter what the wind does lull or otherwise. for stupid 25 foot high 50+ meters distance monster jumps i reach for the 11 edge and head out into the deep for that madness. had some super soft landings and some freaken hard ones i wouldn't want on land!..... Yep if your ever near NZ come and see me i'm in the naki and its most consistant wave spot in the southern hemisphere. definatly a must do before you die if your a kitesurfer. 2-3 meter swell and head height waves, cross on brease is the norm around here.It truely is world class. Wind is usuall on aswell. theres very few weeks I don't get out. Most of the time its possible to kite 6 days a week if you didn't have to work. Quote
Andy-j Posted June 22, 2011 Report Posted June 22, 2011 shouldn't have kicked the board off.. Just lift the tip and ride it out onto the sand before faceplanting into a heap on the sand. I've had to do this before and came out ok. Quote
kinny Posted June 22, 2011 Report Posted June 22, 2011 Nice colours there mate, bet thats sore! Quote

kevob Posted June 22, 2011 Report Posted June 22, 2011 Shallow water is the only way to go, It adds to the risk factor lesson learnt - dont kick your board off now go do it bigger in shallower water and man up! Quote
