Anne1599968726 Posted September 3, 2010 Report Posted September 3, 2010 But have you ever made or modded a backpack with one? I'm off back to uni soon fourth and final year, yays! However - my uni rucksack is not waterproof. This annoys me. I always have notebooks and stuff. I often have gym kit. I sometimes take my laptop in. All this stuff likes to be dry. I have a shorty wetsuit that I don't need. I think it would be interesting/fun/weird but useful to create a backpack keeping-dry device from my wetsuit. Has anyone tried this? The most basic idea I can think of is to cut slits in the front of the shorty for my backpack straps to feed through, then literally put the bag IN the suit and zip up the front - but this leaves the neck as a gaping hole at the top of my bag for the rain to get in. Also means my straps soak up rain but I think that's inevitable. I'm not the best seamstress in the world and I have no idea how to cut neoprene then sew it back together in a waterproof way. So obviously although I'd trim off the excess, I'd like to make my rucksack waterproof (and unique) with the minimum of cut-and-stitch. Ideas please? Quote
Awesome Posted September 3, 2010 Report Posted September 3, 2010 just wear it n stuff everything inside, sorted :-) unique you will be Quote
Anne1599968726 Posted September 3, 2010 Author Report Posted September 3, 2010 Wearing a wetsuit that doesn't fit, to uni, ain't really an option. I could maybe buy a new bag but I like my old one. Its big with compartments. It just isn't able to keep water out. Am also pretty skint right now and I like the idea of recycling my wetsuit in a uniquely useful way. Quote

Anne1599968726 Posted September 3, 2010 Author Report Posted September 3, 2010 How much fun can be had in a wetsuit that is too tight and the wrong shape? (It's a men's shorty. I'm a busty woman) Come to think of it, if it zipped up the front it could be fun for spectators ... Quote
festa Posted September 3, 2010 Report Posted September 3, 2010 might the lunch box make it look like you have had an unfortunate moment in the back that way round Quote

Anne1599968726 Posted September 3, 2010 Author Report Posted September 3, 2010 Lol festa I'm in Scotland, not very local for you, sorry. Well actually .. neoprene is waterproof, it's the fabric covering that soaks up water. It protects the neoprene underneath though, so hmm. I was hoping to be able to use the windproof rubberised torso parts to cover the bag, really only the shoulder type area would stay wet - and the whole thing would be removable so it could hang up to dry somewhere. I'm going up to town tomorrow, I'll keep a lookout for bags. Just in case. Must go to bed soon, I have a plumber coming round at eight in the morning Quote

Anne1599968726 Posted September 4, 2010 Author Report Posted September 4, 2010 Just found out I'm distantly related to the plumber we share an auntie and a bunch of cousins! More wetsuit/rucksack thoughts ... do some more chopping to get rubberised (ie non-sponge-like) material on the bottom of the bag. Turn the front (back) part upside down to put the neck at the bottom-front of the bag. Also use the legs (or arms) to partially cover the shoulder straps. Hmmm Quote
