After putting off the inevitable for far too long, I want to take the plunge and enter the world of depower.

I have already read some of the related threads in this section with good advice on suitable kites and sizes for first depower landboarding, and amongst my considerations is the HQ Montana.

Now usually newer is better, but my budget is nowhere near half a grand plus, so are there any issues with the mk1 or mk2 Montanas? I don’t mind a scruffier kite that is a bit less responsive, but don't want to buy something that, for example, lacks a decent safety system.

Do not buy Mont 1 or 2.

The newer 1's are v.gd but the first 1's were terrible. What is your budget? I think u should be looking for an 05 frenzy(Should get 1 cheap enough) or later model.

I quite like the 3, it does overfly and invert sometimes, but that could be me, I think the first ones were their first steps into depower and it showed, the 3 had ironed out most probs. I kept my 9.5 because I liked it so much, I haven't flown it for ages as I have others to play with, but it has plenty power, depowers nicely and turns pretty quick.

the safety on the early monts are ok but the issue is luffing and overflying and general all round poor handling. you say you havent got he budget for new but tell us what is your budget. I fly the mont 4's and 5's and these are v good kites indeed and as they are from HQ the price for a 4 is very cheap in comparison to some out there(you may be suprised at what you can get for your money) what size are you after as well i may just have a kite for you going cheap

im on the montanna 4 and 5, both really nice kites with plenty of what you want and more. sure you can get a mk4 for a good price. Swing over to aberavon for a demo any time im out most of the time, just let me know when your coming over and we can arrange to hook up and demo them as i dont always fly at the same spot.

Thanks for the advice and offers

I would gladly have a Frenzy also. I didn't mention them because they have already been well covered in threads. Montanas don't tend to crop up often, hence the question.

In fact parksy, I'd love to put an offer in for the FX you have advertised, but it's out of my price range unless I sell my blade or flow. (Ain't gonna happen)

As for budget, I have an absolute top end of £300, so would expect to sort something fairly decent.

I'm 11.5stone and do a mixture of beach and inland grass. I guess I'm looking for a 9M or 10M foil to progress from the fixed bridles I currently have.

Wenglish - Cheers for the demo offer, very kind of you. I'll drop you a pm if I can wangle a trip across the bridge this weekend or some other time soon

I've got a 12.5 and a 9.5 Montana 5

I'm 10.5 stone (66.6kg) and use the 12.5 alot as we have such light winds this summer the boost and folat is HUGE on it! and i'm very happy on it in 25mph however i would have probably changed down as the 9.5 is Soooo much fun and faster and we all know that brings Big grins - super stable and highly recomended.
