Bones Posted October 10, 2012 Report Posted October 10, 2012 So you need to set your sport as kite surfing? Quote
gum-nuts Posted October 10, 2012 Author Report Posted October 10, 2012 So you need to set your sport as kite surfing? yes! no buggying on there! Quote
Bones Posted October 10, 2012 Report Posted October 10, 2012 Wouldn't it come under "Other" then? I realise that this is a bit pedantic, but I don't want to make out that I am kite surfing when I am not. Particularly when I already have to explain to everyone that I don't kite surf, I kite on land. Quote
gum-nuts Posted October 10, 2012 Author Report Posted October 10, 2012 The type of exercise is more for the calories burned - I list myself as kite surfing as it is similar, well except for sitting down and being dry! Quote
plummet Posted October 10, 2012 Report Posted October 10, 2012 i will take this challenge on, on my landboard. I'll just use my gps and complete the hour. then just for shits and giggles i'll do another 23 of those hours and see what i can do in one day. yep i'm readying for another 24hr. if i could average 40kph for an hour and top out at 65-70 kph i'd be very happy. DJ_Sylk Posted October 10, 2012 Report Posted October 10, 2012 Sounds like fun, just setup the app, i have a roster day on Friday and the forecast looks good so we'll see how it goes. Quote
Slartibartfast Posted October 10, 2012 Report Posted October 10, 2012 The type of exercise is more for the calories burned - I list myself as kite surfing as it is similar... Wow, you must buggy pretty hard! Personally I would list myself as "Watching two people play tennis" as it would be similar Quote
zahra Posted October 10, 2012 Report Posted October 10, 2012 Personally I would list myself as "Watching two people play tennis" as it would be similar hahahhaha id pitch myself in for the same I had endomondo app but i uninstalled...was of no use to me Quote
gum-nuts Posted October 11, 2012 Author Report Posted October 11, 2012 I think endomondo is great, look here for my latest track - http://baldiviskitebuggy.blogspot.com.au/2012/10/another-laid-back-sunday-session.html You will need it set to kite surfing to take part in the challenge! Quote
Bones Posted October 11, 2012 Report Posted October 11, 2012 I think endomondo is great, look here for my latest track - http://baldiviskitebuggy.blogspot.com.au/2012/10/another-laid-back-sunday-session.html I can do the same by uploading the data from my GPS. The Etrex 10 is great with the mini usb port. I just bought a second one. Quote
Bones Posted October 11, 2012 Report Posted October 11, 2012 Endomondo allows you to import files from a gps device if you don't want to use the smartphone app. Quote
DJ_Sylk Posted October 11, 2012 Report Posted October 11, 2012 Time to head out to the lake I think! Quote
gum-nuts Posted October 12, 2012 Author Report Posted October 12, 2012 Time to head out to the lake I think! Have fun, fly safe Looks like I will get my first attempt tomorrow, then try again Sunday Quote
Bones Posted October 12, 2012 Report Posted October 12, 2012 I see John Holgate beat me to it. Using GPS and the app run the battery flat on my phone very quickly. I had to turn it off halfway through today's session so that I could still use my phone. I will try uploading my GPS data. Quote

I had to turn it off halfway through today's session so that I could still use my phone. That's funny as I can use the app on my iPhone for a couple of hours and still have loads of life left in the battery. Quote
Bones Posted October 12, 2012 Report Posted October 12, 2012 Ha! If I use the app and import the GPS file it counts both for the same time period. Beat that Mr. Holgate Ok, I will delete the app session now. Quote
Bones Posted October 12, 2012 Report Posted October 12, 2012 Nope, I deleted it, but it is still there in the total. BTW, I think that the challenge is actually set up for total km for the entirety of the challenge period, not just for a single hour. Quote
DJ_Sylk Posted October 12, 2012 Report Posted October 12, 2012 Just got a helmet cam & yes I will learn to keep my head still next time Quote

BTW, I think that the challenge is actually set up for total km for the entirety of the challenge period, not just for a single hour. You can't be that specific when I set the challenge. Hamish yours is showing that your distance was set over nearly two hours! What I am going to try today an tomorrow is two sessions of kite surfing which should both register in the challenge the edit the poorest to "other" and hope it keeps the best listed - its going to take some tweaking first time of trying a challenge! Slartibartfast Posted October 13, 2012 Report Posted October 13, 2012 I see John Holgate beat me to it. Using GPS and the app run the battery flat on my phone very quickly. I had to turn it off halfway through today's session so that I could still use my phone. What did Mr Holgate beat you to? If you put your phone into "aeroplane mode" (GPS still works in aeroplane mode) and turn off the screen you should get a good amount of battery life, something in the order of a day or two. Any smart phone should have at least a 1000 mAh battery and the newer ones have more like 2000, which is plenty to run a GPS app. I haven't tried this app in particular but I use MyTracks a fair bit and if I shut everything else off I get several days out of a fully charged battery. Quote
Bones Posted October 13, 2012 Report Posted October 13, 2012 What did Mr Holgate beat you to? I was hoping to get in first and claim I was winning. I see that the extra 9km has been removed from my total now. If I was to turn my phone to airplane mode, then it wouldn't function as a phone, which is more important. Particularly as I (like most others) have a dedicated GPS already. Quote
gum-nuts Posted October 13, 2012 Author Report Posted October 13, 2012 My first go at this today, 19.41kms in 52 mins 26 secs. The wind was pretty on and off but did some decent runs. Started with the vapor but it was to all or nothing and it was to frustrating - so dug out the core and had some fun! I know people rate the onshore westerlies but whenever I have flown in them (like today) they always seem gusty and lumpy. Where as the easterlies seem cleaner and smoother. Get to play again tomorrow morning, so I now have a benchmark to try and beat - Used the app on the iphone and started with a full battery, after an hour of using endomondo, it was still well over 3/4s full! Quote
Bones Posted October 13, 2012 Report Posted October 13, 2012 Do you have the pro version? I notice that for $0.99 you can buy the "low power" option. I am not sure I want to use an app that makes you pay so that it doesn't use so much power. When creating a challenge the options for goals are Most km Most workouts First to reach X km Most calories Most active minutes Fastest X km They need an option of "Furtherest distance in X minutes" Another good challenge would be fastest 20km Quote
