Jev Posted February 16, 2011 Report Posted February 16, 2011 Just wondering if anyone has any advice/experience in regards to injury prevention when riding with boots vs straps. I've been off the water for close to 2 months now after a severe sprain to my ankle. Have been doing rehab exercises and feel that I can try to get back on the water again. I've been thinking about getting a board with boots to prevent any further injury as it provides a bit more support to the ankle. Is it worth it or should I just tape the ankle and take it easy for a while riding with straps? I'm riding a twin tip by the way not a surf board. Cheers, Quote
.Joel Posted February 17, 2011 Report Posted February 17, 2011 Tookie (Rob) destroyed his ankle, couldn't kite for about 8 months. When he went back to riding he was in boots, he still may be in boots. See if he pokes his head in here. Just watch out, because he's a bit of a stalker. Quote
Jason Posted February 17, 2011 Report Posted February 17, 2011 Just get a Nobile or North skim and ride that for a while. With no straps you cant apply pressure to your ankle. Quote
Goz Posted February 17, 2011 Report Posted February 17, 2011 I seem to recall seeing that 661 and Protec make some ankle supports that can be worn with normal shoes etc. might be worth looking at and work out cheaper. I would have thought you would be more likely to do damage to your ankle with boot style bindings if you crash awkwardly, but I may be wrong. Quote
Jev Posted February 17, 2011 Author Report Posted February 17, 2011 I never used boots for kiting but when I used to wakeboard and crash I always lost he board instantly, so it possibly could do more damage in certain situations especially if the wrong foot stays in the boot. I assume overall it could give more support for the ankle while cruising. But then again tape and an ankle brace may just do the same trick - if not better. I will tape the ankle and put an ankle brace on will see how that feels, if not good I'll try using my surfboard. Quote

SoutherlyBuster Posted February 20, 2011 Report Posted February 20, 2011 I've never riden with boots, but when I first started kite boarding I had a some ankle injuries, ditto when starting out landboarding+kite. Then I starting doing ankle strengthing exercises and balance exercises, plus heaps more practice/experience --- result no more ankle injuries. I just ride with standard foot pads and straps. I try to keep both feet in and if I have a buster do the turlte back and keep the board from digging in, but that is rare. If one foot comes out, and quick smart get the other foot out, other wise an injury can quickly happened. There was a thread on this a couple of years ago. I thought at the time it was good to have the feet not locked in too solid so I can slip them both out in a a hurry, Joel said he prefers to be locked in. Now that I have more experience, I'm with Joel and prefer to be locked in, but still standard straps. I've also heard with the boots you need some one to help you get in. For my landboarding, I trialled some heel straps to fully lockin. This was for with the kite, scared the bejesus out of me and took them off quick smart. I like to be locked in but not to the extent that it is difficult and slow to get your feet out. Regards, Norman. Quote
kitesnowboarder Posted March 21, 2011 Report Posted March 21, 2011 I would strap your ankle and ride straps or strapless for a while until it is properly healed. Riding in boots gives you more support but when you wipe out its hard and you could damage your ankle again. Quote
plummet Posted March 22, 2011 Report Posted March 22, 2011 i would have said try some strapless surfboard action. the your just get wiped off the board rather than twisted ankle. failing that i would have thought loose bindings that you can jump out of quick smart. Quote
Jev Posted March 23, 2011 Author Report Posted March 23, 2011 Cheers for the comments Been out now a few times - when there was wind - and taping the ankle seems to be working ok so far. Landings can be a bit painful though but I'll be taking it easy for the next few months. Decided to stick to my usual board with straps and won't try any new moves in ankledeep water for a while. As suggested a strapless surfboard would probably be the best option to prevent any injury until it's all back to normal. Quote
