a legal party in a field

you're doing it wrong

usually its not legal, but last time there was a party in a field they got chased by a load of coppers. so we would prefer this not to happen if there was over 100 people

Over 100 people in an open air venue with loud music = illegal.

music festivals can do it. so why cant we? surely i just have to get the right permissions?

Yeah, but I'm guessing they go through a lot of stuff to get to that point. I don't know though, not an expert, just remembering our law lessons

Is it close to houses?

im not sure as its not my feild. i will have to aske at school who has a feild away from houses.

one of my friends had a birthday party in her feild about 25-30meters from houses and we were playing music till well after midnight, most probably the music will be off by 1 or be quiet by 1

You'd need an ents license to put something on in the local park, or town hall, but if it's private land and you have the landowner's permission, and you're not causing a nuisance to neighbouring properties then you're free to do pretty much as you like regarding music, no. of people etc, on private property that you own / have permission to be on.

no, but if its loud enough to be heard by others you do, its strange but, if there are builders working on a house and they have the radio on loud enough for others to hear, then by law, they have to pay something, not sure how much or who to though

i shall see what the council say i should do, i just wont give any hints as to where or when it will be.

EDIT: actually i just remembered, the dad of a girl in my year is the head of a dept in the council, that might come in handy;) :D

Are you planning to charge for entry or is it a private party ? That is the major issue which determines whether you need licenses, etc.

The builders example mentioned below is because they are part of a business, just like shops. In that case any music heard by the public needs to be covered by a Performing Rights License. If you charge then you'll need to organise a lot of this sort of stuff.

If it's just a private party in a field with permission there's no problem, unless you are causing any sort of nuisance. Just do all the common sense stuff like informing any neighbours beforehand and then making sure they aren't too affected by the music and all the cars/people.

As for how music festivals do it, you really DON'T want to know the hoops you have to jump through for a music festival to happen. My dad used to help organize a local festival - it was £2000 upfront before the festival, then there was an on-site inspection 10 minutes before the gates opened - if ANYTHING failed, the festival was delayed until it was put right.

This led to one year where 500 people were waiting outside the gates while me and him frantically hit the safety rail on the step up to the portaloos with sledgehammers to try and get it into place properly.

In the end we just had to give up and tell people that the toilets were now unisex.
