nemo_sushi Posted October 15, 2008 Report Posted October 15, 2008 happening more and more.. Mine and the GFs card got skimmed and used in Pakistan and US on the same day.. Luckily the bank didnt let the transactions through.. Seems chip & pin isnt that secure after all.. Quote
Urb Posted October 15, 2008 Report Posted October 15, 2008 chip and pin is pretty sketchy. From what I've been told the one's they use in restaurants send your pin & account number between the reader in the little box to the transmitter in an unencrypted manner, so it is feasible to just read them off if you have an unscrupulous waiter... Also, if anybody thinks the machines are secure, I'm pretty sure they're not meant to do this... Quote

Ummm didn't you think to contact your bank:o Lloyds have a system where by if they spot any dodgy looking transactions they phone you... and it works well Quote
Ally Posted October 15, 2008 Report Posted October 15, 2008 have you been using the cumbuco cash point? i think i saw a thread somewhere about it being dodgy lately...? Quote
SeaView Posted October 15, 2008 Report Posted October 15, 2008 Chip and Pin is useless. The only issue about Chip and Pin that the banks wanted to implement is the fact the holder of the card is now responsible for the security and supposedly, any dodgy transactions. Previously it was the seller and the bank who was responsible as they were required to do the physical 'check' of the signature. C&P relies upon software to decrypt and encrypt the transaction. And any software can be hacked or at least a process can be put in place to hack the system. I am hearing more and more of dodgy readers being installed in locations which intercept the payment process. A number of shops and petrol garages have been hit. Quite often with inside help from the workers in said businesses. I was done, for the second time, last month. Had a call from Barclaycard on a Sunday morning (again) asking me whether I had just withdrawn a shed load of cash from an ATM in Cyprus. Yeah right. Swines had cloned my card yet again. I thought I was pretty careful with the card. Only using it in selected petrol garages, mainly super markets and high profile retailers such as Shell, BP and Esso in open locations such as Motorways or big servce areas. I only do business purchases with it such as PC World and other high profile hardware shops but this has not worked. And as far as I can be sure of, I always cover the keypad with both my hands. The first time (I think) was some little scrote in a Travel Lodge in Sheffield. I am confident of this as it was the only payment I made that required my PIN for around three months prior to another Barclaycard phone call. Simply, the technology is not secure and was never secure. My solution... Finger prints or Iris/Cornea scans. Forget any device or security method that CANNOT be tied directly to the card holder. The only thing that will bring C&P down is when the banks realise that they cannot pin (no pun intended) the responsibilty on the card holder any longer which now appears to be happening more and more. The fact now that simply not disclosing your pin (The crux of the previosu argument), cannot be considered as a foolproof method of securitising your card, will mean the banks and card issuers will need to consider an alternative. Or even go back to signatures. This will only happen once the losses said banks are making via fraud outweighs the cost of implementation. Rant over. (for the moment). Quote
