Hi Guys

Quick question. I got this bike a few weeks ago and since it has been breaking atleast once a week. The first issue was a cracked headset which did not stop the bike but made a very strange sound like the front end was going to fall off then the chain came apart on a very light incline then a piece of aluminium holding the gear shifter at the back has broken so I got it sorted and with in a day its broken again. The question is if any one else has this bike have you had any problems or have i just ended up with a 'friday nighter'

Thanks Stu

A cracked headset is most likely down to it being badly adjusted before you got the bike then riding fairly hard.

A new chain is pretty unlikely to snap though. Did you put any lube on it when you got the bike? New chains are supplied with a waxy coating to stop the chain from rusting but it doesn't provide any lubrication.

Do you mean that the rear derailleur is hung from a replaceable mounting? If so they're designed to break if you clip the derailleur on something rather than bending the frame. I've yet to see one break on its own.

Take the bike back to Halfords, explain the issues you've had with it and get them to service the bike and check everything over for you. Or you could take it to your local bike shop and pay them to do it.

I've seen a couple break from a badly adjusted rear mech putting strain on it. I'd take the bike back to where you got it from and demand a full service, if it still breaks down, ask for your money back as the problems you list sound to me like an incompetent mechanic.

I had two different Carrera's a good few years back - decent bikes for the money (not much), but you had to pretty much strip them and rebuild them to be sure they were up to the job, Halford's aren't bike experts.

Its gone back now but halfords have refused to refund it cause they say its to badly worn the most offroad its seen is a muddy field and the second hanger broke last night when I went off a speed bump at 10 MPH. Its come at a bad time as i have a holiday soon so we've gone to evens cycles and got a new bike but the whole thing has been a misfit from the start ive had it 7 weeks and it must have been unusabul for at least 4 and by the way i did oil the chain a few days after i got it i just cant get it they marcket it as a bike to run down a mountain and its flumaxed by a muddy field.

Threaten them with trading standards mate, it clearly wasn't fit for purpose. The faults you've described are most likely due to it being set up badly, I've never seen a headset fail in that quick a time! It may be worth getting a local bike shop to look it over then go back to them with the faults he finds.

Well my dads had enough with the whole afair the guy at halfords sugested that the tires were worn and that i had to swapped them to make it look like the bike hadnt been mistreated but how cause its been non-usabul with a broken gear hanger after it went in with the chain im not going to swap the tires round incase it has to go back again. So my dad has written them a letter to let them know that hes going to take it to court if we dont get our money back for something that has just been a pain in the arse
