Scrub Crash Shorts

I had my Scrub crash shorts as a Christmas present off my wife as she wanted to protect my delicate buttocks! I found that the best thing to do is shop around as I bought mine for £18.95 (I bought them myself!) including P&P, but I have since seen them on the web for £34.99!

They come in four different sizes ranging from small through to extra large, I bought a large pair and they fit my 34inch waist comfortably, remember they need to be tight to be effective.

What you get are black lycra mesh shorts with a draw string waist which have built in foam padding which covers the hips, they also have a large coccyx pad which includes anti penetration protection.

I thought to give you an idea of the pro's and con's of these shorts I would break it down into three sections comfort, protection and usability/practicality.

Comfort

The lycra mesh of these shorts make them very comfortable. The fabric is cool and so far I haven't got over heated (but then it is February). The separate pads mean that the shorts are unrestrictive and don't impede my movements at all. After a few minutes you forget that you have got them on. I always put them on before heading out boarding and this means I am usually wearing them for 20 minutes in the car without any discomfort.

Protection

Thankfully it has been a while since I last took a serious fall, so these shorts haven't had any major impact testing! But from the few minor tumbles I have had they have proven to be more than adequate for the job. The coccyx pad has definitely saved my ass more than once! The padding has also prevented me from getting soaked!

Usability/Practicality

I think this is where these shorts are let down, unlike many of the more expensive products on the market the Scrub shorts don't have removable pads so they are dry clean only. Where as more expensive shorts have removable pads so can be machine washed.

The other downside of crash shorts (and this is most shorts I have looked at) is the complete lack of a fly hole! This can cause some difficulties when trying to relive ones self on the side of a hill, but is a minor consideration.

Overall

These shorts are fantastic value for money, they are very comfortable and I forget that I am wearing them after a few minutes of putting them on, even when sitting and driving in them.

The level of padding appears to be on par with many of the other products on the market and they have provided more than adequate protection in the few minor falls I have had and I am confident they will provide protection if I ever have a major stack. More expensive shorts do use more high tech padding and some have removable hard shells.

The down side is that they are dry clean only, because the pads aren't removable, but for less than £20 I think I am going to risk putting them into the machine when they need it, until then I will wear them over my underwear (to much info!).

Unless you are into very extreme air/speeds these are more than adequate to protect your butt for a very good price.
