Can you meet up with a group of local flyers who will be able to offer you advice and maybe let you have a go on a variety of kites

The trouble with kites as anyone will tell you one is never enough :D

you'll get more speed if you use a smaller kite in more wind , like a 3m and a 6/6.5m when you can't get moving on the 4.5 , its not the larger the kite the more power and then speed , you can just use the 4.5 in moderate wind and then a larger 6.5m in lower wind , if you see what i mean ,

scud goes on the wirral sand yacht club thread in the meets section

ive got a 2m pkd brooza for high winds, pulls like feck at the edge of the window good for going upwind,

best to try and stick with the same model of kite and get a few different sizes like a 2m,4m,6m will get you going in most winds
