kitegirl Posted October 28, 2007 Report Posted October 28, 2007 Anyone from the Dundee area on here?? Am considering moving there next year and wanna know about the local kitescene.. am sure there'll be one, looks like an awesome spot. Got mates-a-plenty in Troon, Tiree and Aberdeen, but am specifically lookin' fa people who fly local to Dundee... kitesurfers, landboarders, buggiers.. even mountainbikers, climbers or snowsportsers if anyone's into that kinda shizzle too?? Would be good to know a few people before I make the big move! Go bigger, Dee Quote
neilj37 Posted October 28, 2007 Report Posted October 28, 2007 Ped, on here might be your closest kiter - I think !! But then again geography wasn't my best subject. And BTW why would you want to move to Dundee Quote
Ped Posted October 28, 2007 Report Posted October 28, 2007 I agree with Neil why would you want to move to Dundee???? As for the closest na I'm 30miles further north but There's a few guys around Dundee that fly with a few more that kite surf regularly just up the coast at Monifieth - Your best bet would be to sign up over on http://www.tractionkiting.co.uk there's quite a few local meets threads going on there for all us on the north east coast - so if there no one flying local at the time there's always a lift on offer to where everyones at. Angus is based in Dundee I think and he's a very good kite surfer. Plus you'll only be half an hour over the bridge and you'll be at St Andrews and there's always someone there:) Ped:) Quote
angus8ken Posted October 28, 2007 Report Posted October 28, 2007 ditto, why go to dundee im not really in dundee but spent 5 years of uni their and now stay aobut 20 mins away.... there are a few folk about... for beaches your talking st andrews ( 25-30mins ) or lunan bay ( 30-40 mins??? ) for land or for water you have monifieth ( 10mins ) st andrews, lunan or shellbay if you fancy a trek... there are a few dundee kiters but quite a few around the fife scene - st andrews seems to be the sort of hub of scottish kiting... give me a shout if you want to chat about the kiting around dundee Quote
zimmer Posted October 28, 2007 Report Posted October 28, 2007 Don't listen to them, nowt wrong with Dundee. Great people great nightlife. I'm not to far from Dundee, as has been said before you will be pretty close to St Andrews and there are a few other good flying spots in the area. Not to sure about you moving anywhere near me after I sent you the naff cd though :-) Quote
angus8ken Posted October 28, 2007 Report Posted October 28, 2007 scumdee? don't do it dee!!!!!! and thats coming from an orcadian  dundee doesnt have the best reputation but to be honest its actually not that bad - like anywhere there are the good bits and the places you avoid Quote
Paul Smith Posted October 29, 2007 Report Posted October 29, 2007 dundee doesnt have the best reputation but to be honest its actually not that bad I always remember that the best bits of the city were the signs that said 'You are now leaving Dundee' Quote
Biff Posted October 29, 2007 Report Posted October 29, 2007 There's quite a lot of regulars at Monifieth now and getting better all the time. Angus you've still not been back, when you going to start driving??? Not sure i'd pick Dundee to move to if I had the choice but there's far worse places out there. Just out of noziness why Dundee? Good luck with it anyway sure you'll be welcomed with open arms! Quote
angus8ken Posted October 29, 2007 Report Posted October 29, 2007 There's quite a lot of regulars at Monifieth now and getting better all the time. Angus you've still not been back, when you going to start driving??? been 5 or 6 times, gonna try and make it over a bit more time but to be totally honest i prefer kiting at shellbay despite the water quality being manky! grantyg Posted October 29, 2007 Report Posted October 29, 2007 Just move dee - the beaches are great no one has mentioned snow kite potential yet either! St Andrews is a great scene with friendly folk. Dundee is ok there are worse places - specially north of troon! Quote
kitegirl Posted October 29, 2007 Author Report Posted October 29, 2007 Yay!!! Awesome, thanks ever so for all the posts... OK, why Dundee... 1. I couldn't afford property in Edinburgh, Glasgow or Aberdeen and wanna buy a house.. Dundee prices are doable.. and for my kind of work I need to be near enough to a city... without massive commutes (I'm a single mum). 2. I have friends in Edinburgh, Tiree, Ullapool and Aberdeen.. seems quite a central spot - easy to get to each of the aforementioned places, whilst not living inland... 3. My son wants to go to Dundee uni, and I wanna link him in early as possible with their marine biology programmes. 4. Dundee looks like it takes plenty of wind directions?? 5. I've a fella in Aberdeen, so wouldn't mind living a little closer than Hull to him. 6. I've heard great things about the 'scene' in Dundee.. good student culture, good bars, good art scene, good clubs.. am I wrong?? 7. It's not far from the snow scene, and BOY do I wanna snowkite.. Also, am into mountainbiking, climbing, etc.. so I reckon Dundee looks like a good location to base myself?? 8. Close enough to St Andrews.. so I can meet up with my Canadian mate who comes over annually.. and stalk Sim Culpin 9. Remember. I'm moving from HULL... Dundee is surely a step in the right direction??? I've always loved Scotland, wanted to move there for yonks.. went to New Zealand and just came back loving Scotland all the more.. think next year's the time to get on with the move. 10. It's got my name in the town.. DunDEE.. what better reason to move there? Och man, I cannae wait Quote
angus8ken Posted October 29, 2007 Report Posted October 29, 2007 3. My son wants to go to Dundee uni, and I wanna link him in early as possible with their marine biology programmes. whilst i dont know much about their marine biology courses i do know dundee uni pretty well - just finished my BSc & MSc there, if you need any info or info about it give me a shout... ( my msn thingy is on my my profile thingy - also notice youve joined the tk forum s you could contact me through that if its easier ) 4. Dundee looks like it takes plenty of wind directions?? within about half and hour i would say you have a good 270 degrees wind coverage for kitesurfing. the kitesurfing and kiting community in general for all these spots are great 6. I've heard great things about the 'scene' in Dundee.. good student culture, good bars, good art scene, good clubs.. am I wrong?? woud have to say it is pretty good - not near edinburgh or glasgow but then it is much smaller... 7. It's not far from the snow scene, and BOY do I wanna snowkite.. Also, am into mountainbiking, climbing, etc.. so I reckon Dundee looks like a good location to base myself?? dundee has its own indoor climbing wall - dont think its huge but its still supposed to be pretty good i think.... dont really mountainbike myself but know others in dundee who do and apparently awesome tracks are within reach 8. Close enough to St Andrews.. so I can meet up with my Canadian mate who comes over annually.. and stalk Sim Culpin is that mark? im pretty sure i met him briefly a couple years back - nutcase!!! havent seen sim around in a while... 9. Remember. I'm moving from HULL fair enough Quote
Ally Posted October 29, 2007 Report Posted October 29, 2007 kiting - cockenzie and gullane climbing - ratho mountain biking - glen tress and innerleithen come down to edinburgh dee when are you thinking to move? Quote
Westwood Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 for us residents of hull anywhere is a move in the right direction (apart from middlesborough according to phil and kirsty) Quote
Biff Posted November 7, 2007 Report Posted November 7, 2007 When's the move on then or is it off again??? Just asking as I happen to have a fab house in best part of town for sale! 5 Minutes from beach and can even see if anyones out on water from the house! Buy it:D:D Hope all is going good. Quote
kitegirl Posted November 13, 2007 Author Report Posted November 13, 2007 Hiya Biff, Yup, looks like it's a goer... but, like I say, it'll not be til I've finished my degree, so next summer earliest... was hoping to stretch my current employer to a month in Brazil at the end of next year, but the way things are going, I may well be offered vol redundancy before then, so think I'll take the money and run (north) I've seen a couple of places up that way, one or 2 nice ones in Broughton Ferry.. is yours up for sale yet?? If not, when are you selling? And, obviously, the all-important.. how much is it?!? Go bigger, Dee Quote
crut Posted November 13, 2007 Report Posted November 13, 2007 So, has he Done Dee? In Dee he has Quote
neilj37 Posted November 13, 2007 Report Posted November 13, 2007 Aberdeen house prices ain't that expensive if you don't mind living outside of the city. I live just outside of Aberdeen in a village and the prices there are pretty reasonable. If you are into climbing then there is the new aberdeen transition extreme centre: http://www.transition-extreme.com/ You'll also be closer to your fella and a great bunch of kiters Quote
Biff Posted November 14, 2007 Report Posted November 14, 2007 Not wanting to sound like a snobby d!ck but yeah Broughty (pronounced Broty) Ferry is one of the nicer bits!!! Hopefully my house will be long gone by next summer though. A month in Brazil sounds awesome, think you should definately try and get that before the money if you can. Dundee tis a funny place, was up the Sidlaws- hills at back of Dundee-mountain biking today and with the river, snow on hills etc it's the best place ever. Get close though and hmmmmm!?!?!?!?. Hope you like it when you do come up. Any info just shout. Kris. P.S. £150,000 and it's yours! Quote

Biff.. that's kinda within my price range dude, when's it going up fa sale - or is it already?? I'm after min 3 bed.. have seen a couple of 4 bed places in the 160-170k range... the earliest I could do is April, and that's if I complete this degree.. which isn't entirely a certainty at the mo!! Send me an email with any further details to kitegirluk@yahoo.com. Wooo hooo, hope those Dundee house prices don't start going up before I can get my act in gear! Go bigger, Dee Quote
mac007 Posted November 17, 2007 Report Posted November 17, 2007 hey there, dundee as a place aint really the best. ive lived here for about 8 years and im pretty happy. luckily ive met up with a load of wicked people. both kiters and non. what i like is that you are pretty central for loads of biking. especially aviemore, fort bill and heading south towards the borders. kiting spots are good. shellbay is about 45mins away. monifieth about 10 mins and st andrews is 30 mins. hope the move works out and hopefully see u around soon. biff, when u out next. the madness with work is over for the timebeing. later all Quote
Biff Posted November 18, 2007 Report Posted November 18, 2007 Dee, remember it's offers OVER. Usually add 10-20% onto prices. Hoping mine will be gone in a couple of weeks but let ya know if not. Mac, going back to work and a week of days unfortunately, burst my new kite as well, waiting on new one arriving. Back to nightshift after a week though so hopefully catch up with you soon. Tomorrow looks great for Carnoustie with big waves or St Andrews, think a few guys heading out. Quote
