Hey guys,

I am just about to finish a year in industry (which I haven’t really enjoyed) and go back to uni for my final year after which I should walk away with some class of BEng in Aero Engineering. Before I am forced by money / personal life / career (in whatever I end up doing) to settle down; I am thinking / wanting to take a year out, to do what I am not sure. :confused:

I have a few possible options in my mind as to what I can do but was wondering what other people have done.

Some of the things I am thinking of are;

  • I have the option of going travelling with a friend of a friend but not sure how much I want to do this and realise it is likely to cost me a fortune and won’t be for a full year.

  • Try and find a job somewhere nice for a year in another country which will hopefully have something to do with kite surfing where I can relax / have fun and kite surf. :D Prob be on my own for this one...

  • The final option is to try and find work at one of the many children’s camps abroad for a year as a councillor as I have done this for the past 5 years through summer for a local school as an assistant open boating instructor and is something I really enjoy.

So if any of you guys have taken gap years abroad or have ideas speak up and share ur experience! I Know its still a year away but need something to look forward to other than work for after uni! lol

Thanks for any thoughts / Ideas guys!

I've just done the gap year thing, worked and saved for a while, then blew it! I went on a diving conservation project in the seychelles for 5 weeks with a company called GVI, or Global Vision International who are brilliant. The specailise in going gap year projects, and do anything that you might even be remotly interested in. I had a brillaint time, and really want to go back!

im in exactly the same position as you.

im just going into 3rd year, and need to go on a trip at the end. seeing that ive done uni before a gap year, i can spend as long as i want abroad.

personally, ive got 2 ideas;

1) go some where completely original and add it to the kitesurfing map...im thinking Samoa.

2) go to a place called 'X-isle sports'. its on the coast of kenya. you get your instructors certificate and a shed loads of other stuff. Go onto facebook and look up X-isle sports in the groups, tells you more info.

still considering my options, but going to make it kitesurfing orientated.

What im planning to do after a year or so of working is go to Australia on a working tourist visa...where you can do casual work to fund your trip, say working in bars or fruit picking!!

Just finishing my year in industry, where were you at?

Mine has been great would definately choose it again.

I spent a month in Oz in the middle of the year and wish I had been there a year I would definately do the whole work and travel thing out in oz if I were you. I want to go back for a few months after uni.

Personally I think the expeditions and conservation projects are a rip off you pay like £3k for a month or something I was in Oz for a month for about £1.5k I didnt work at all out there.

I took a year out as a production engineer working at a company called Actaris, based in Manchester. I finished after 9 months as I had decided it wasn’t something I didn’t want to do with the rest of my life and production engineer isn't really on the up and up at mo either.

I am now working at Kirklees Council as a Civil Engineer but still not thinking it’s for me, I can't get used to being at a desk all day, as I am a really active person. I think I may well end up doing a PGCE and become a teacher as I really enjoy working with kids, I am also looking at joining the police.

TBH I was wanting to spend more like 9 to 10 months where ever I end up, which is why I didn’t like the idea of the majority of stuff only being 3 months max! I may go the way of travelling and earning money as I go, so the traveller’s visa sounds like a bit of a plan... i.e. work in a bar and surf may just have to try recruiting some people.

Are you planning to go back to uni first, or suspend studies for a year after your Sandwich placement and resume your course after (take 2 years out instead of 1 yr placement?)

If the second, then you should bear in mind that there will be financial implications if you are a home (LEA funded) student.

@TINY:- I am thinking I am going to go back to uni first finish my main degree and then go on from there. There is no way i am missing a year as when I go back I would be forced to pay the new £3000 fees!!

@Rob:- lol, come on... there is room for one for one more for a year :p
