thegman89 Posted May 11, 2007 Report Posted May 11, 2007 Any tips for job hunting? Have apllied for quite a few jobs and either heard nothing back - or they're not interested Any good job websites (apart from the usual fis4jobs, monster, matchtech tec) Cheers Quote
rod_bunny Posted May 11, 2007 Report Posted May 11, 2007 www.jobserve.com www.contractoruk.com has links to loads of other sites - plus got a contract search that covers 5 other sites at once. www.contractoruk.com/directory/recruitment_agency_directory.html And get used to the agents not getting back to you... employement agents are the people that couldnt get a job doing anything else Quote
stumcgoo Posted May 11, 2007 Report Posted May 11, 2007 s1jobs fish4jobs monster itjobboard totaljobs you will find the same jobs listed on different sites. After you apply always follow up with a phone call to see if they have any questions. Cheers Stu Quote
raptor Posted May 11, 2007 Report Posted May 11, 2007 try the job centre website Obviously your not at the age to bother looking for full time employment. dont even bother with the job centre, any decent company will use specific agencies and nothing else due to the waste of time most of the aplicants are that are sent from there, plus companies are realising most that come from job centres have to be taught basic english and maths. presentation of a cv is the crucial key to replies. if it is more than 2 pages they get binned as most recruiters dont have time to wade through lots of pages. they have to be accurate and easy to read if not they get binned irrespective of the qualifications the person has. A work collegues wife works at aston martin so she trawls through hundreds a week with most of them going into the bin straight away if they are too long or to complicated to read quickly Quote
Extream Posted May 11, 2007 Report Posted May 11, 2007 Your making out that recruiters read the C.V. they don't they stick it on the computer and search for key words along with the million others then maybe e-mail or call you. Good advice above tho - send the C.V. - give it about 10-15mins then call them and ask what they thought - then they might read it - if your very lucky or they may remove it from their trash and read it (nothing personal you understand they just had 10 C.V.'s in the same few minutes and found it quicker to trash them than read or save them). Thats it my post of cheeryness for the day - in the mean time it's windy go out and enjoy! Quote
raptor Posted May 11, 2007 Report Posted May 11, 2007 your cv will not get read they look for the ones that they think will be of interest, when a job comes available at a desirable place thousands of cv's get submitted, some are vetted by computer but the most get scanned by a hr person who has no skills or full understanding of the job needs hence the majority going in the bin. most jobs are already gone before they are advertised and the ad in the paper is just a legal formality. personal recommendations usually are the norm, my past two jobs were from personal recommendations from people i know. use a specialist agency and don't believe fully what they say about loads of jobs most are probably not relevant for you. just stick at it something will come along Quote
kinny Posted May 11, 2007 Report Posted May 11, 2007 keep plugging away pal, the jobcentre one is jobcentreplus.co.uk, if they ask you to come in and fill in an application form then do it to show your bothered. And if you get an interview be eary and overly smart and smile, doesnt gaurentee you a job but its what i look for when interviewing people , it doesnt mean anything other than they can tell the time , dress themselves and smile but its a good start! Also if you post something rather than email it seems to help, imo , you should at least get a reply . Good luck Quote
ZoMbooLio Posted May 11, 2007 Report Posted May 11, 2007 if applying for a specific job, on the question "why do you think you can do this job" answer it by addressing all of the person spec requirements, and include an short example of when you have done whatever it is they want. Quote
BrianCalshot Posted May 11, 2007 Report Posted May 11, 2007 I have a friend who is fairly wealthy (his recent divorce was 7 figures) anyway he said that he wished he had not worked so hard when he was younger as how ever much money he has he cant buy back his youth ...so GMan sign on and party Quote
kinny Posted May 11, 2007 Report Posted May 11, 2007 if applying for a specific job, on the question "why do you think you can do this job" answer it by addressing all of the person spec requirements, and include an short example of when you have done whatever it is they want. Good tip, you can use this in all aspects though, with each question they ask you or any contact you have with them , think about the question for a minute and basically tell them what they want to hear! If you are asked to say what good/bad qualities you have , with the bad points turn them around, " im a bit of a perfectionist" i work too hard sometimes" that sort of thing, they are usually looking for ticks in boxes from the questions your asked, maybe not that relevent but if its a big firm / company or shop etc , then maybe do a bit of research on them prior to an interview, it shows (or at least gives the impression) your not just working to get paid, which is probably the reason 99 % of the working world do work! raptor Posted May 12, 2007 Report Posted May 12, 2007 if you get an interview i always take the view that the interview starts the moment you talk to the receptionist as they can be asked for their initial views of you. with most jobs advertised most people replying to them will only be able to do 70% of what is asked. if they are lucky they might find someone who is able to all that is asked. most look for a person who can pick up the job quickly with little training and is able to intergrate with an existing team enviroment. one question i have been asked a few times at interviews is possibly a trick question, if you had an imminent deadline at work and a family problem what would you do ?, my answer is family always first job comes second. Both interviewers agreed on the answer and i got the contract /job. Quote
