Heyup,

Just thought I'd share my exciting news! :)

I'm a static (and a bit of buggy) flyer on Blades at heart and on Wednesday next week (16th) I'm off to Collarejo, Fuerteventura with these guys http://www.extremeholidays.com/kitesurfing/introduction.htm

for a week of having a go at kitesurfing for the first time!! Thought it would be best to get some proper tuition and have a holiday at the same time :D

I'm dead excited! Just wondered if any of you guys have been to the capital of wind for some kitesurfing? What was it like? Friendly? Places around? etc

..........proper tuition

Extreme holidays and proper tuition, hmmmmm, I'm not so sure thoes two phrases go together.

I just hope they are better than when I went a year ago.

Corralejo is quite good. Plenty of night lift to keep you amused. For good food head off the main parade at the harbour end. There is a great mexican and traditional spanich restaurant there. If in doubt, head to Krunk and ask Eugene (the guy who owned the shop) there about them, he will tell you where to look, top guy.

I'm off to Egypt!

Have fun!

You need to push the guys at extreme if you wana spend time on the water as they are very chilled to say the least, try and get lee as your instructor as he is the best out there in my openion, unfortuanly what the guys in the office tell you doesent always add up, such as wakeboarding when theres no wind, they dont even own any wakeboards! Saying all that we learned enough to come back to the uk and get straight on the water, i hope you get as good a group as we did and you'l have a great crack at the pubs & clubs after lessons although gettin in at 5-6am and up for 9am every morning kind ov slows down the learning process.

me, im also goin to egypt this year

have fun

Hmm, mixed reactions.

Thanks both of you anyway! I'm an optimistic person so I always try to see the best in stuff!!

Destroyer, can you choose which instructor you'd like or do you get what you're given for the day?

I do a bit of sailing so I know how the wind works (Tacking & Jibbing etc). However, as its my first time kitesurfing, do they get you on the water on the first day or what?

Take everything to do with sailing out of your mind and start with a blank sheet. The instincts you build up in sailing don't hold water with a kite. It'll just hold you back. Other than a reliance on wind, they don't share much else in common IMHO. (that'll probably start an arguments, sorry if anyone got offended...)

I was out there with extreme holidays last year. I was in the intermediate group and had a blast. But I would go along with what the others said, make sure you push the instructors (and yourself). Don't be afraid to throw that kite around the place and learn about the kicks dealt out by a kite. It's those kicks that get you up and going when you're in the water. All you have to do is master them.

Good winds dude.

im afraid they are right... extreme holidays are a bunch of cowboys. If I were you id ring the office before you leave and ask them to tell you what their policy is in case you are unhappy with what you receive... ie, in the eventuality that what you receive does not match up to the descriptions you have been given whilst buying a holiday from them. There are plenty of distance selling regulations which can be brought into play here and Id be tempted to tie extreme down into giving you some guarantees of a service level.

It'll be great fun but dont expect to get back doing jumps and staying upwind.

on the plus side...they do have a power boat so you will be pretty safe....much better doing your first waterstrats in the deeper water

:o hmmm, I'm still optimistic!! lol I imagine the way you fly around the wind is similar to buggying in that you drive your board slightly into from the wind to go upwind?

If I do enjoy doing/learning something active, I do tend to pester coaches anyway to get my monies worth so that shouldn't be a problem :D

Im also thinking about going to Fuerteventura for a kite hol, let us know how you get on.

Do you think i would be best taking my gear or hiring?

As a relative beginner would i be better off going on a course or just cracking on?

Hey James,

I'd def recommend going on a course

I'm taking my Blade 6.6 but for when I'm on the beach in the free time I have. I have a few wetsuits and other water gear for my kayaking so I'll be taking a few bits for wearing. As for the sea kiting, I own a few harnesses that I'll be using, although I'm hiring the kites.

Me and the missis are off to Fuerteventura with extreme in july for 2 weeks. Having read everyones comments I guess I'll have to wait and see.I see they are IKO approved. I guess I should have checked with them but does anyone know if you come back with an IKO certificate?

I will be very interested to hear how you get on easy rider. Especially what sort of gear they give you to use.

Have fun!!

Well i've been back for a day since spending 2 weeks with extreme holidays in Fuerte, i will do a nice big write up over the weekend most likely. Suffice to say was the best holiday i've ever been on (and theres been plenty) and am desperately trying to reschedule other holidays to go out there again with extremeholidays.

Hey guys,

Well been back a few days after 1 week with Extreme Holidays in Fuerte.

So, overall the holiday was 8/10. As people have said the guys there are very chilled and relaxed - definately beach bums. However they did give you the 4hours per day tuition as you pay for which is good. This was my first time in the water with a kite. I spent the first day body dragging out to see and getting used to using this kite in the water which was fun, no big deal. However, in the 4 hours I was there in a day, I only spent perhaps 1.5 hours in the water - this is due to only allowing 3 people in the water with a kite at a time - there can be up to 8 people there (not inc instructors). This includes Improvers and Advanced people - purely on rescue boat cover and insurance purposes I think. Everyone else is usually rigging up kites on the beach and getting ready to go out again.

Out of the 5 tuition days, we only did 3 days of kitesurfing due to 2 days having very little wind believe it or not! Did a bit of buggying with a Flexi Rage (yey!) and some surfing in white wash **** (pooo).

As people have said on the forum, you do have to push the instructors to keep the pace moving and really ask for advice because they usually won't give it until asked about something. The 2nd Day was learning to get onto the board and using the kite and yourself to get going - not as easy as it looks to be honest. It'll definately help if you've ever surfed or wakeboarded. Eventually by the third day I was getting up and surfing for 10 seconds here, 15secs there before loosing balance and falling in. I just couldn't quite grasp leaning back a little and carving into the water.... Time then, was up! I needed two weeks really to crack it.

As for the hotel - "Club Las Olas", its ok - thats it really. The rooms are quite spacious, however the water pressure is all over the place because of the lack of clean water on the island. You really have to time shampoo application!! Buying drinking water is definately recommended.

Food - Fantastic! Really nice if you find the right restaurants. Go towards the harbour end of town (10min walk) and you get some nice places, Ask the instructors for the best places on what you want to eat. On the way, you'll get people urging you to eat at their restaurants, ignore them! The food ain't brilliant.

The bars are nice too, Corky's, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (previously Oink Bar) and Waikki beach club are all nice.

I had a young guy called Ant as our instructor, good lad, well paced and v. friendly. Also another guy Tam, can be cocky, but generally ok. Richie is the Extreme Manager out there - top lad.

Overall I did enjoy myself out there mainly due the the great friends I made and that we all learned together. I would go again with Extreme, but next time I'd go for 2 weeks.
