Helmet or no Helmet... that is the question

Recommended Posts

Going skiing the first week in March to Valmorel, third time i've been so not a complete noob, im out of the whole snowplough business put it that way

Just wondering is it sensible for me to wear a helmet for just normal skiing maybe a lesson or 2 on a board:rolleyes: ?

Im thinkin about taking my Fabio and sabre1 with me if the baggage limit isn't too low, so im gonna need a helmet for that, but is it uncool to wear a helmet for normal skiing.

Personally i think its best to look uncool and save ur head when u smash it off a rock, but whats the trend?

Also if anyone would recommend a helmet manufacturer it would be appreciated, lookin at Quiksilver atm

thanks abba

Depends on your confidence, what you will be riding etc. If im doing off piste/tree skiing then I always wear a lid. If im on piste I dont because I get too hot wearing one. Also dont really think its neccessary for on piste, not alot to bang your head on!

Its all done to personal preference I feel. Im happy in my ability to get out of someones way on the slopes even if they are completely out of control (ive done it plenty of times as an instructor!) I always recommend the kids wear helmets because they often dont know their limits and go crazy fast without know how to stop in time. However I let the adults choose for themselves. I dont think ive ever seen a head injury on the slopes ever, seen plenty off piste, in the trees and in the park. But never on the piste itself. Think it must have to do with the way people fall that they are always in a postion to break their fall by breaking a wrist/arm/leg first.

I bought myself a helmet just before my recent snowboarding trip, didn't really need it but I'd like to think i looked cool ha ha, and if i didn't - who the hell would have know it was actually me :D

The problem is less trees & rocks...

And more the guys who like to s%$£ you up from behind - and get it wrong sometimes. I had a guy run the back of my board over a couple of years ago with pretty dire consequences for both of us.

Was glad I was wearing a lid.

I've been snowboarding for years... took 2 caught heels edges and the resulting knocks on the head to convince me to spend the money. Now I ride with a helmet every time.

If you're learning something new then the chances of ****in it up are high, and if you're not pushing it and learning new then you're just a waster ;). I fell just last week mucking about doing some surface butter spins, didn't half crack my head on the floor. 7 year old nephew stops next to me to see if I'm okay and he says "mmm, if you weren't wearing your helmet then that would have ended your day, right?". I get up, we ride off. Says it all.

30mins later he falls in front of a 20 stone fat american noob and the noob turns to avoid him. Tails edge of the board cracks him just above the base of his skull, well hard. He's 7 so there's a few tears and a very apologetic noob. But once I'd explained how bad it would have been sans helmet and how tough he was then we're up and chasing the noob down with a nice big snowball in hand for retrobution (with a smile, no hard feelings dude ;) )

Both were unexpected events, both times the helmets either protected us from ourselves or someone else. You never quite know what's going to happen, and you're not always in control of the event as it unfolds either.

Finally, my sister-in law works as a legal secretary, her boss was at Squaw Valley, California out with the whole family just before Christmas. They were coming down a fairly steep run, well groomed with a strip of fresh on each side between the piste and the trees. The kids were mucking about in the fresh when his 15 year old daughter bumped something hidden in the fresh and lost a ski, lost control, went into the trees, and was stopped head first by one of them. She lost her fight on the way to the hospital in the air ambulance.

ALWAYS wear a helmet. The fact that you even thought about it should set the alarm bells ringing.

I only really wear one on kickers and sliders, but may take to using it on the piste from now on. Good advice from this chap.

Oh, and no helmets aren't hot and sweaty. Most have vents, some adjustable, and almost all come with a sheet of little bungs to fill the vent holes in the case of it being Siberian cold.

I think the best position on safety gear is if you have it, why not use it?

course saying that I know very few people that actually have helmets, dont myself (still savin up for a tranciever, reckon thats more important - hate having to rent one I havent trained with!). and doubt it would be very useful in a high speed collision, though saving you from a bit of a sore head/concussion is a different matter...

I wouldnt normally comment on this, but at a guess I would say you have no kids and are probably single. Other wise you really do appear to have your priorities wrong.

It doesnt matter how competant you are at flying. You could be the top world class flyer but what happens when "Mr/Mrs Noob" come blasting into your space at 30-50mph in a steel buggy and you have no helmet on? or suddenly a "Tree" "Jumps" out in front of you on the 1 occasion you get lofted by a freak gust?

Hope the transiever sends a direct alert to the emergency services or you could end up being FUBAR!

I'm the opposite of crob. I wear mine all the time when I'm at a resort, but if I'm doing a back country trip, then I don't bother with it. On-piste in a resort, you've got the piste to contend with. That stuff can be solid and I've seen some nasty head slams going on, even outside the terrain park.

Also, WGAF what you look like. Sounds like you feel you should wear one, so wear one. I've been using mine for years, even before they were as popular as they are now, and never thought anything of it. Certainly not been laughed at. Not for that, anyway. :)

30-50mph in a steel buggy

you think an inch of plastic is going to help?

I dunno, its not something I wanna try out, but I wouldnt count on it. Im not anti-helmets or anything, if i had the money Id get one no probs, but was just saying I dont think it's a priority

nope, but if my friends get buried in a slide I'll be able to find them and dig em out.

No I think every millimeter will help. Anything is at the end of the day better than nothing when the term "Protection" is used.

As for not making the main component of your body a priority, I call that ignorance. WHEN you do suffer a bang (which is inevitable) to the head, just remember those words... "I dont think its a priority" We will all chip in and feed you with a spoon for the rest of your life... NOT!

A few quotes to dwell on...

The doorstep to the temple of wisdom is a knowledge of our own ignorance. Benjamin Franklin.

The only thing more expensive than education is ignorance. Benjamin Franklin.

There is no darkness but ignorance. William Shakespear.

Where ignorance is our master, there is no possibility of real peace. Dalai Lama

When ignorance gets started it knows no bounds. Will Rogers

Ignorance is the night of the mind, A night without a moon or a star. Confucius

There is only one good, Knowledge. And one evil, Ignorance. Socrates

The evil that is in the world, almost always comes from ignorance, and good intentions may do as much harm as malevolence if they lack understanding. Albert Camus

And finally....

Your Ignorance cramps my conversation. Bob Hope.

If these thoughts do make you turn and get yourself a lid, it was time well spent me looking them up ;).

If not I can only say "I tried".

While we are on ignorance tho, Do you realise how difficult it is to find someone buried underground even with a transiever? Do you realise how hard it is to dig them out when using only your hands for shovels and the walls keeps caving in? Do you realise just exactly how long you have to find a person and hope they are still alive when you do? I doubt it, but you obviously know how to work technology and impress the girls with your beautiful reciever though.

I wouldnt know the answers normally, probably due to not taking part in snow activities and ignorance. But I happened to see a real life situation 2 nights ago, involving an avalanche with the rescue team out looking for lost people. It was very interesting to see how the best trained most properly equiped rescue team were nearly all killed.

Admittedly the helmet wouldnt of made any difference, but the GPS the guy had so as to be able to be found in such a situation wasnt any good until he was nearly on top of him, and then he was only located with the use of a walking/ski pole (do you carry one of those instead of a helmet too?). And that was rescue team equipment!

Dont kid yourself.

GET A LID!

Good luck. I think you are going to need it. At least for the time being.

Gotta agree with everyone who says wear a lid. I've been snow boarding in France for a week at a time for the last two years, all of it on piste, caught my heal edge several times and wasn't wearing a helmet, nothin serious but definitely pain i could have done without. Throws yer confidence aswell. Hopefully going somewhere this year and definitely gonna get a lid. Any recommendations for one, can ye get a good quality one for under £50. The one i use on the water isn't up to much. Cheers.

Well all I can really recommend is one with ear protection as well,if ya gonna be in the cold. It will deff help stop those satellites on the side of ya head fallin off so fast :) .

I have a 'Trespass' one. Dont think its gonna be anything like the dogz but Im sure it will take the brunt of most all I am gonna throw at it and walk away from.

My 661 one is ok but not so comfortable, and my ears get cold too!
