Should I wait for a Century or wait for a Combat?

I've been waiting for about a century to find a 4.5m Century. Should I continue searching or should I wait for an unspecified amount of time until the Combats are finally released?

Has anyone flown the Century 4.5 and the closest equivalent sized Combat? How do they compare?

Or, you could take a look at the U-turn Butane - designed by the same chap as the Century/Raptor II (same kites, different names). I own a couple of each, and the Butane is essentially a MkIII Raptor - feels close to the Century, just a little smoother on the power delivery, and possibly a touch more lift (but only if you want it). Very nice kites indeed.

The Combat is starting to look like the best kite that never was :(

I have a 4.5 cent and it is my favorite kite. As everyone else says - dont wait for the combats - If they ever do turn up you can always sell your 4.5 at the later stage....

Hate to say it, but Cents have a very bad return on the second hand market!

AndyC,

I haven't had a chance to fly a U-turn Butane or a Raptor II.

The 4.5 is missing from my otherwise complete set from 2.5m up to 7.5m. It would be a shame to have one odd-ball in the set. (Having said that I'm forced to fly a Samuari 4m or a Blade 4.9 at the moment. Neither are ideal in a buggy.)

I'll keep an eye out for the kites you suggest and pester anyone I see with the right stuff. Thanks for the suggestions.

hmmmmm yes combats... def not worth waiting for.

and if you looking for a kite to go with a set your best bet is too keep it the same make / generation so you know how much of a size / speed your movin up to.

So if its a 4.5m you need for cents then get the cent.

But i should say get a razor.... or yak but they are completly different kites. so thats bad advice..

Plus i dont have that size for sale :D

My mate just got a 6.5 RaptorII - very similar to the Century.

I've just emailed Roger at PKD about the Combats - they better come out soon or I'll be spending my money on a Phantom or a Venom. I had a go on both over the holidays [ thanks Crob & Motfly ]

tszy,

What did you thing of the Combat? How did the Century and Combat compare?

Completely different kites!

The Combat doesn't like coming out of turns, but is a real machine on the apparent wind! It also isn't as good as the Yakuza, maybe close to the cent, at going down wind!

The cent is most definately a very easy race kite to fly, and gets better as you get to know it. The Combats seem to be much harder to get used to, but very sweet once you find the perks of them!

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but when on earth are the Combats ever going to be sold to the general public? And for that matter, I heard a Century II was on the way - any idea when that will come out?

Seems like PKD sponsored riders have had Combats for about 2 years now, but still not on sale? Are they still being refined, or are they never going to be sold?

Ozone seem to be cranking out new kites (and damn good ones as well) every year, whereas PKD seem to be stuck back in early 2000s with still nothing new coming out. Their main website hasn't been updated for ages, neither have their UK or US distributor websites. Are PKD about to disappear, or are they still in business?

Not sure if the original poster of this thread got their Century or not, but I've had a 4.5 Century for about 6 months now, and it is a truely awesome kite - it's power amazes me every time I fly it. My only complaint is that it's usable wind window seems pretty narrow about 15mph seems to be it's sweet spot for me. Any more and it whips my butt, any less and it doesn't give enough pull for buggying. That said, if the wind is in this sweetspot it really is an awesome kite for cruising along in the buggy.

Cheers, Kev
