payneib Posted August 31, 2006 Report Posted August 31, 2006 have just got mine back, sorted out the brakes etc but: i dont know how the dead mans break is supposed to work AND on an initial test "push" it dosnt seem to have very tight turning circle, am worried about spending 4 days in the gybe like a supertanker. AND i cant get hold of any bindings, apperently munkey bumdo them i've been told. can anyone sort out a ds noob? Quote
Foilman Posted August 31, 2006 Report Posted August 31, 2006 Hey m8! Welcome back to the dark side:) Re the DMB, its a bit of a pain on the GPs - don't really work that well & not that easy to remove. Best bet is to wedge an old CD under the deck to stop it working. The idea is to stop the board rolling away from you if [when] you fall off. In practice this only happens once in a blue moon. Usually, they will just fall over within a couple of yards. If the planets are all in alignment, then they can roll a suprisingly long way - but I've only seen this happen once - fortunately! Don't worry too much about the turning radius - it is big, but with practice you can turn in a fairly small space even in light winds with a big kite. For the fastest turns though, learn to jump 180 transitions:D Flexidecks and GPXs turn a little tighter, as they sit a bit higher off the ground so you can lean 'em over a bit more before the rails grind out. The 9m Phantom will be absolutely ACE with the 'Surfer - I use mine when its too high for my 15m ~>20Kts, but if you can inflate it fairly easily, you can get going with it. You'll have to work it a bit at the lower end though. Re bindings, you can either use the standard DS velcro straps -- which are OK, or MBS F3s which work really well. DS now have new straps out called 'Deluxe Foot Straps' which don't seem to be generally available yet, and may have a few teething problems. Check mkyd.com for details - but its down at the moment (?) You will find it much harder to get going without some sort of foot straps though. I think I may have a set of brand new DS velcro straps somewhere - still in the pack never & fitted - you can have 'em for a tenner if you like - and I can find em! Have fun - its wicked fast! Quote

Mini Cooper is picking up a Road Racer for me on saturday:eek: well how could i turn down a new toy for these prices:o:o The only difference i can see between the GPX and the RR is the tyres, am i missing something major??? Was just gonna head off down the local bike shop and pick up some normal BMX ones. I'm gonna be after bindings, can you use any type or is it better to stick with the DS/F3 ones? Quote
Foilman Posted August 31, 2006 Report Posted August 31, 2006 Yep - its a GPX sprayed yellow with slicks! Re bindings - Most people who have 'upgraded' have gone F3, but the new DS ones are meant to be good - just not sure how easy they'd be to get hold of just yet... I'm very happy with the F3s on mine. payneib Posted August 31, 2006 Author Report Posted August 31, 2006 i have just had the best session of my life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i'm now icing my thumb and my elbow is bleeding everywhere and my £50 knee pads got tested to the max!!!!! yeah, its the one from free spirit, the others just have sooped up brakes and slick tyres. i think the ds is more like kitesurfing than well, kitesurfing!!! you need to be slightly over powered, really agressive on the off, and heel right back to hold the line. i even managed acouple of gybes (was just stoppin, gettin off and turnin it around). one q? tho, is it a good idea to let a little preasure out my tyres? over the not so smooth grass it was bouncin and shakin like a loon. awesome bit of kit!!! I went and had a look at the RR at FreeSpirit yesterday, Apart from the tyres I think you might find the wheels are slightly narrower to take the duro slicks. Unfortunatley they only had RR on display so could not compare wheel\tyres sizes Tim Quote

Foilman Posted August 31, 2006 Report Posted August 31, 2006 i have just had the best session of my life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ..... one q? tho, is it a good idea to let a little preasure out my tyres? Awesome! Told you you'd like it! Re tyres, a bit flatter it it will slide more easily, harder & it will be more grippy. Lower pressures will make it softer, but mind you dont blow the tyre - if its too low, they rim can cut the sidewall. They are all a bit on the rattly side - especially if you are riding hard pack. Even the stock flexi can be a bit stiff. The new thermofibre decks are very smooth - and of course - my custom trampa makes it feel like surfin on butter... Quote

payneib Posted August 31, 2006 Author Report Posted August 31, 2006 notethe avatar change!!!! i lovemyds! Quote
tom1599968574 Posted September 1, 2006 Report Posted September 1, 2006 good to hear your lovin it! with the solid metal frame boards, there are several variants that are pretty much the same board. the differences are the lug for mounting a disc brake, the brake lever and the wheels. road racer is excatly the same as a gp with a disc but powder coated yellow. the wheels are identical, just a different colour. A flexi has a much smoother ride because the deck can flex and absorb the bumps, frame boards can tend to be bone shakers on rough ground at speed! youll also find you can lean a flexi much further over just becasuse it rides higher, meaning you can carve harder upwind and hold more power. as for straps, duno if you will be able to get hold of ds ones (munkey dont seem to be around much at the mo...). f3's or any other strap can be made to fit with a bit of bodging...! Ive always said its much more like kitesurfing than a four wheeler, just a bit less sideways! t Quote
