I was out kiteboarding at last weekend at BRS, everything was going great and I had begun to nail some 360 spins (a new trick for me!)

I under rotated one of these spins and was going to land on my back/backside so I put my left arm out to stop the impact and crunch, I dislocated my shoulder! I sat there for about 10seconds wondering why I didn't have full control over my arm before I realised what had happened My shoulder was now basically next to my armpit rather than above it! I knew I should try and get it back in and the obvious thing to do was lift, but my arm wouldn't cooperate so I had to grab my left had with my right and pull it up over my head. That hurt a lot, but the shoulder popped back into position, thank god.

Some friends rolled up my kite and lines and we walked to the car. While doing this I was showing one of them what had happened, and foolishly put my arm behind my back and lo and behold my shoulder dislocated again. Needless to say after relocating it by pulling it over my head, I kept it still for the rest of the day.

I was taken to a local hospital with no x-ray facilities where I was told that the shoulder seemed to be in the right place, but that I would have to go and have an x-ray when I got home. So I went yesterday morning to Worcester where they confirmed that the shoulder was in the right place and told me to go the trauma clinic today. I went there this morning and after more examinations and x-rays I have been fitted with a shoulder immobiliser (a fancy sling that ties round the waist and shoulder) and told to wear it for 4 weeks. I am also going to need physio after that.

So, how long do you think I have before I fly again?

Oh dude that sounds nasty! Make sure you get the physio on the NHS as they can cost a fortune. You will have to rebuild all strength back into your arm but i have no idea about shoulders. I am assuming you tore muscles and stretched ligaments, so maybe 5-6 weeks on top of that????

Broke my collar bones three times. Shoulder injuries are a total pain in the ....shoulder.. You don't realise how debilitating they are until you get one. Do NOT rush back and, get some physio. Three months. Soz.

Muscle and ligament damage is more painfull than a break.

I would give it about 3 months before kiting again dude.

Going back early causes more damage.

MOST DEFENITLY AGREE WITH THAT,

SORRY TO HERE ABOUT YA SHOULDER DUDE.:(

3 MONTHS OFF, MAN THAT WOULD DRIVE ME NUTS..

COULD BE WORSE, COULD OF BEEN 4...

'every day not kitin, is a day nearer to kitin'...

good luck fella..:D

know where ya comin from dude!.. 4yrs ago i got knocked off my motorbike,, dislocated my left shoulder snapped the ball off which broke into 3 and snapped my arm in 2 places.. ended up with 14 screw and 1 plate in there and a 12 inch scar from shoulder to elbow.. was the physiotherapist that got me into kites :D do the rest time then get out there.. start small and work ya way up.. i was told that 60% movent in my sholder would be lost.. WRONG.. got over 85% back! (joint gets very tight when lifting my arm above my head and obviously not as strong as my right shoulder) you'll soon be back dude.. most important is the exorcises!! do them or it will pop out again!!

sounds nasty! When my bro dislocated his shoulder he damaged the muscle and every couple of months it dislocated again from doing nothing (ie pulling the garage door down and picking up a worm  it was hard not to laugh when he did that :D) but a year after he had an op on it and a couple of years on *touch wood* its back to strength now and only hurts occasionly.

This could of been avoided if he left it more like 3 months instead of 6 weeks befor going back to work lifting things so just take it easy and dont get in a rush :) :p

Sheeesh, baaaad news Barry, - as everyone says don't rush anything as the set backs take longer than the initial heal up process.

Shoulders are such a bitch - broke mine in April and don't know if it was cos I was impatient or cos I'm just an old git but have got another x-ray this Wed to see if the damn thing has healed up yet - thats 6 months!!!!!!!! - I can now fly but only in an underpowered bimbly sort of way!!!!!

So, be patient, don't try any "I'll just try this and see what happens" antics as when anything does happen (lotsa pain, strange popping sounds etc)it'll be f**k*d again.

Heal quick fella

So sorry to hear your news - gutted for you !

Its not what you want to hear right now, but shoulder disolcation is an "increasing" problem in a sport like ours... In my prevoius sport (whitewater canoeing) a friend discloacted his while high up a river in the french Alps (a seperate story in itself).

What everyone will tell you (and he has found) is that once a shoulder has dislocated once, it will happen easier next time .... His has been out 4 times now over the past 20 years, each worse than the previous. He had "the op" after the third time, and it seemed alot better, he was getting back onto good water ... however the forth time was the worst of the lot - 9 months recovery and still not right. It now afects his driving ...

Best advice is take all the physo you can - REALLY build up the strength of the mussles before you try anything. If the physo says 3 months (for normal life), think 6+. Then take it really easy ... building up gradually. My friend says "protecting his shoulder" by planning to avoid the type of manovour that could stress it, is now totally instinctive for him (and he paddles flat water only).

So sorry dude - take it real easy, and look after yourself ..

Cheers, Andy ....

sorry to hear that, dude. Take some time out to get it properly sorted. No point in having a recurring problem. Now's your chance try some new hobbies, like filming all the other guys flying...:D

as people always say listen and do as the physio's say, they DO KNOW WHATS BEST. Rest and no movement is to allow the tendons and ligaments to shrink and pull tight. Then the exercises are to stretch them back into shape but still remain tight to hold the shoulder in the socket adequately.

The down side is dude your going to get impatient. Tell the physio what you want to do at the end and they might adjust the exercise program to allow it.

If you end up with less movement you'll find away around it. Everybody else has

Dude 3 months goes fairly quicky (even with Wallop in the middle!) I ended up after an OBE from my board having a 1 inch tear in a tendon in my shoulder. After surgery, 5 weeks immobilsation and another few months off including physio I was allowed to kite again.

What ever you do don't get impatient and resist the temptation to go back to it too soon. Relapse is not what you want.

Be good now and get well soon :) Px
