HORLEY_KITE_NUT Posted January 29, 2003 Report Posted January 29, 2003 Hi there In another mad idea (see kites and skateboards) has any one thought of using a windsurf sail on a mountain board or seen one in action ????? Quote
rasga Posted January 29, 2003 Report Posted January 29, 2003 ive heard of people having such attachments before, are they speedsails or something (name rings a bell) im sure it works, and im sure that someone has mentioned about this before, either they did it or so it being done Quote
burgy Posted January 29, 2003 Report Posted January 29, 2003 Shed loads of fun. I havent done it for ages but I spent quite a lot of my time at uni with a 4m Windsurf rig bolted to my Sk8 board whipping round the car park at HIll Head. very quick & lots of fun. Steve Quote
HORLEY_KITE_NUT Posted January 29, 2003 Author Report Posted January 29, 2003 some thing i was thinging about with using on a long (skate) board. using a small windsurfers sail on a mountian board might make a bit of sense . specially if you hit a park which is not quite big enought to kite but is big enough to board in some way (some school palying fileds which i have used in the past are like that - you kite on them and get from one end to the other in about 10 seconds) . if any one know of any going dirt cheap (sail and rig ,etc, etc ) let us know - its doesn't need to be that big (thinking in the line that the smaller ones will be used for higher winds - mountian board have a bit less friction and are quite a bit lighter than a windsurfers board)... HORLEY_KITE_NUT Posted January 29, 2003 Author Report Posted January 29, 2003 Steve (burgy) sound a bit more sensible / safer than my skate board and kite idea!!!!! Quote
justal Posted January 29, 2003 Report Posted January 29, 2003 Yeah...we do it.... Theres even some photos on my website of us in 'action'!! (http://www.forces-of-nature.co.uk) Mind you, last year these antics did end up in a broken wrist and torn kneww ligament... Much safer with a kite. Al. Quote
skytigerer Posted January 29, 2003 Report Posted January 29, 2003 how do you gibe????? on the m.board i mean Quote
hasbin acharlie Posted January 29, 2003 Report Posted January 29, 2003 he he he... when my boss saw me cleaning down my atb n kites in work, he grabbed the board and hopped onto it, n started jumping around on it n goin for a spin then he explained he used to make skateboards years ago an do wind surfing, he s now shown me pictures of him in his younger days going around a carpark with a sail of about 5m attached to a skateboard. just 3 days ago he said to me he wouldnt mind bolting the sail to the atb so he can give it a try! i just laughed as you do! trouble is i know he really wants too..... might just let him for the laugh.... Quote
justal Posted January 29, 2003 Report Posted January 29, 2003 How do you gybe??? Carefully!!! Actually, its pretty easy, especially if you take a fairly wide arc and are light on your feet and precise in the foot change.. Otherwise its the same as windsurfing and actually pretty easy and good practise for windsurfing. Al. Quote
justal Posted January 29, 2003 Report Posted January 29, 2003 Also...make sure you use much smaller sails on the MTB than you would whilst windsurfing in simialr winds.... We tend to go out with a 4.5-5m sail on the mtb when there isn't enough wind for windsurfing (10-15 knots) Al. Quote
ExtreemDude Posted January 29, 2003 Report Posted January 29, 2003 I know were they sell them!!!! a massive 2m deck and big wheels and trucks and a big massive sail. stevelives123 Posted January 29, 2003 Report Posted January 29, 2003 They used to do it on the old lokos. I think there is a vid of it on their old web site - http://www.loko.co.uk - Look well good laugh. Will try it some day. steve Quote

I've been trying to get hold of an old rig for a while. Its not on the top of my list at the mo. Its behind a van & a 12m Frenzy I'd definatly be up for a play though. 360's helecopter tacks, duck gybes, soo many things I never managed on the water were real easy on the land. Except the stacks of course After reading this yesterday I went in search of my V old school deck. V,wide, concave, no kick. I'd left it in my old dears garage since I got back for Uni. Shes only gone & thrown it away! I can live with that it was the "what do you want a Sk8 board for? your nearly 30 you know"!! That did my head in :)cheers mum. Steve Quote
tarlach Posted January 30, 2003 Report Posted January 30, 2003 Actually i saw a few of them in france so there must be a company that makes em cause they look like they wernt stuck together in a garage with bits of tape and rubber bands;) Quote
justal Posted January 30, 2003 Report Posted January 30, 2003 Yep, the Speedsails as they are called are made in France, and do indeed look a little 'Heath Robinson' They are much longer than a Mt Board, have biffer wheels with wdier axels and the deck is pretty flexible, further off the ground than a Mt. Board, but no wider. You can however stick a sail onto a mt. board which is cheaper and easier to get hold of (most of us already have one anyway). Just drill a hole a couple of inches from one end of the board so that you can attach a windsurf deckplate to it and stick the sail onto it. It works fine. Al. Quote
garykf Posted January 31, 2003 Report Posted January 31, 2003 aaaah the memories of bombing round Tesco's car park on my skateboard and windsurfing sails, got some very funny looks and it was great fun. Have got a picture of when I was in the Navy actually doing it on the flight deck of the ship I was on whilst we were sailing across the equator. Will try and download it soon enough. Quite a few guys used to do it in the car park at West Kirby if the wind was too light to get the boards out. Quote
wills87 Posted January 31, 2003 Report Posted January 31, 2003 there are these things called wing bats or skim bats summit like that anyway, and they are a hand held symmetriacal (in the x axis) sail made out of wind surf stuff, never tried one and youd need a dirt surfer or a helll of a lot of wind, but there good cos when you jump you put them above ur hed and use them like an under powered hang glider will Quote
Guest Spiky_Dave Posted February 15, 2003 Report Posted February 15, 2003 Terrra boards. They started it, and they are still going. You can get them from some windsurfing shops - our club has two. They kick arse. Quote
garykf Posted February 16, 2003 Report Posted February 16, 2003 looks as tho the photo was taken at the Marine Lake at Kirby. Have you been out on the sands with when the tide is out. Do a lot a windsurfing up there and it may be worthwhile bringing my ATB if the beach is any good. Got loads of old windsurfing kit to trash!!! Quote
Guest Spiky_Dave Posted February 16, 2003 Report Posted February 16, 2003 ahh yes, but you have the option of either modding a KiteDeck (BIIIG tires, good for sand, getting me one) when they come out or if they do a version just using theirs. Its just a case of bolting on the bottom haly of a UJ anyway Quote
burgy Posted February 17, 2003 Report Posted February 17, 2003 garykf Fancy selling me some of your old kit? Been looking for a dead rig around 4-5m for a while. Mail me if your interested. I kite on the bank at Hoy so It'd be easy enough to hook up. burgy@x-zone.co.uk See Ya Quote
fox 2 Posted February 17, 2003 Report Posted February 17, 2003 the grogz bora was designed to take a sail. hence the size and weight! Quote
