plummet Posted October 29, 2011 Report Posted October 29, 2011 Something a little different. riding sand dunes. Quote
plummet Posted November 1, 2011 Author Report Posted November 1, 2011 No comments? weird. Thought the landboarders would be interested in some dune riding. Infact i've never seen dune jumping before. its possibly a world first. Quote
ramjam52 Posted November 1, 2011 Report Posted November 1, 2011 Like it, good track too. My partner has done dune belly boarding and that was mad, sand in every hole:). Looks like it could be a good challenge. The more I watch videos like this the more I am convincing myself that I need a depower.. Quote
GeorgeFromDevon Posted November 1, 2011 Report Posted November 1, 2011 nice, that looks like a lot of fun. any chance of some close up pictures of your board as im thinking about making a soft sand board for when the beach is shit. Quote
plummet Posted November 1, 2011 Author Report Posted November 1, 2011 Here's a some pics of the monster board. Note i've put a wider axle in since then. Quote

plummet Posted November 1, 2011 Author Report Posted November 1, 2011 things to think about when making a monster board. Bigger wheels mean if you mount them on standard board/truck set up yourl be an inch or 2 higher. make a lower board. bigger wheels means more leverage ratio which means your standard stiffness trucks are now too loose. your'l need to stiffen the trucks up. wider axles also increase the leverage ratio. stiffen your trucks more. if your buying wheels and hubs from and industrial wheel guy to some research on the bearings for the hubs and how to fit them to your trucks. lastly you better have strong trucks. there a hell of a lot more force with a monster set up. GeorgeFromDevon Posted November 1, 2011 Report Posted November 1, 2011 i got some steel channel trucks i was thinking about just cutting the old axle off and welding a new one on, and was thinking about double 8inch wheels. how is it compared to riding a normal board? i was thinking about making an axle thats 5inches longer then the existing one. i can get uprated springs for the trucks as im not going to add to much to the axle. it must give you a hell of a big confides boost knowing you can go over anything Quote
plummet Posted November 1, 2011 Author Report Posted November 1, 2011 3.00 x 4.10 x 3.00. 260 x 85 is written on the tyre. you want to look for a grooved tyre. chunky tread is not as good as gooved in the sand. my axle is 100mm wider than normal. They are my copy of the Revo P centers made with carbon housings and duplex axles. yes they are very confidence inspiring know i can land in the complete soft and not crash. But to be really good in complete soft a bigger wheel is required. These work but its hard work in completly dry sand. They are a great compromise between hard, semi hard and some use in soft. If you wanted to make a dedicated soft only board i think double the width wheel is required. I've been looking at gokart rear wheels. that might be a goer. But there is another But. Ride the dunes was real hard work and blew my knees out for a week. A going bigger and heavier than my current 10kg board will be even harder on the knees. Quote

Quote
plummet Posted November 1, 2011 Author Report Posted November 1, 2011 They fit on normal trispoke hubs. but the hubs aren't really wide enough. They work at a pinch but wider is better. I made a 15mm spacer, put in longer bolts and widened my hubs.... give me a wider contact patch and better in the soft. PS i'm running that tryes at 5-10 psi. Also allowed me to use the standard bearings and axle... except machined for the wider hub spacer. Quote
Bunny87 Posted November 1, 2011 Report Posted November 1, 2011 Thats some mental lunaresque terrain your riding (hence choice of soundtrack?) but cool. Your one lucky dude to have that kind of playground, It must be heaven for buggiers? Guess you need your monster board on that terrain. Would normal 8" have got through it as it looked soft in parts? Quote
plummet Posted November 1, 2011 Author Report Posted November 1, 2011 Maybe on the hardest morning 8" tyres would have worked for a little bit. but i guess the short answes is no. as soon as theres even a little bit of wind blown sand your stuffed on a standard board. We did have a GI conflict on 9" mbs tyres and that never got used on the dunes. Yes it is a mental landscape and a buggiers dream. I only get there once or twice a year. its 5 hours drive away and then you need to drive 50km up the beach in a 4wd to the dunes. I don't have a 4wd so have to scam a lift for me and my gear when i'm up there. Quote
