Chip_Slog Posted June 18, 2010 Report Posted June 18, 2010 Hi all just getting into boarding and after a new kite thats better suited to it. I fly most of the time inland. The torch and ion are two of the kites ive been offered, both nearly new, which would you choose between the two and what sort of price would you expect? Any comments appreciated Quote
Darshak Posted June 18, 2010 Report Posted June 18, 2010 Hey mate, i dont know much about the Torch but i've got a Ion2, and from what i've been told about most C-Shapes is if your kiting inland, you want to stay away from them. If you get gusty winds its just going to keep snapping at you, i've got a 11M Hadlow 08 which i fly inland sometimes, and when the gusts pick up i have to put it down cause i cant handle it when it starts to snap. The ion2 will offer more depower and if its your first LEI i wouldn't go for a torch with it being one of the most powerful kites around If you kited at the beach all the time then a torch could have been acceptable but for inland flying i would defo go for the ion2. Afro1599968737 Posted June 18, 2010 Report Posted June 18, 2010 flying C's (the torch) inland can be fun but requires experience... for a first depower & LEi the ion is deffo more suitable its worth checking that its in good condition though... see if the pulleys, bar grip & depower line are worn, see if there is any loose stiching on the leading edge Quote
Westwood Posted June 18, 2010 Report Posted June 18, 2010 the torch is a freestyle kite with a lot of power - more suited to water really. the hybrid kites like the ion depower further allowing you to hold your edge. deffo go for hybrid. Quote
Winnans Posted June 18, 2010 Report Posted June 18, 2010 (edited) Ion 2's are awsome kites. Nice stable and floaty, I much prefer them to the ion 3's. I have a full quiver 10.5, 12.5, 14.5 & 16.5m. I love the bigger kites for there Low wind nice and easy big lofty lift and float, but the smaller sizes are great to fly hard and generate Good lift and float with their speed. But I do just love the lazy easy lift and glide on the larger kites. The ions are very forgiving and munch the gusts and also great on the water. Edited June 18, 2010 by Winnans Quote
Chip_Slog Posted June 19, 2010 Author Report Posted June 19, 2010 Awesome thanks for the replies guys And I have been recommended a 10m but would people recommend something bigger for a 60kg lad? Quote
Afro1599968737 Posted June 19, 2010 Report Posted June 19, 2010 a 9, 10 or 11m will be about right for 15-25mph Quote
kinny Posted June 19, 2010 Report Posted June 19, 2010 another vote for the ion2 from me, had a 12.5 and a 10.5 and both were real confidence kites. Can't comment on a torch but it is a bit gruntier as mentioned so for learning and in gusty inland wind i'd steer towards the ion2. Quote
Chip_Slog Posted June 19, 2010 Author Report Posted June 19, 2010 Yeh thats what id been suggested afro, cheers for the confirmation and for the extra vote of confidence kinny Quote
Krazy Kiter Posted June 19, 2010 Report Posted June 19, 2010 12.5 and 8.5 i think is the best quiver - which is why ive got them i prefer the larger sizes in 5th mode, and the smaller ones in 4 line, to give the maxium wind range. Quote
