bit of a generalisation there, my aspire one is still rocking along fine and it takes a good bit of abuse on a near daily basis.

When it boils down to it there really isn't much between them all, same processors same chip sets it just comes down to which one she likes the feel of most. all of them will break if if you abuse them. if its going to be used for uni work them go for one with a larger screen and pick up a propper keyboard, small keys get boring real quick if you have a lot to type.

Not sure if they are still selling the version of the NC 10 i got (Bought from argos, the cheapskates) but mine came with a 3 cell 2,200 milliamphour battery which only gives 2hours use at best. Make double sure its the 6 cell 5,200 milliamphour battery which gives it great running time. Other that that little gripe with mine, its a great piece of kit you can watch BBC iPlayer on it no problem unless you are running it on lowest setting battery saver setting, then it starts to be too slow for iPlayer. Give her some good earphones too the speakers are diddy.

Another vote for the NC10 (with the bigger battery, mind)

My girlie's daughter has an NC10 and a dell mini10. (don't ask, ok! lol)

The nc10 is heaps better.

I did loads of research when me gal was after baby lappie for her sprogg and overall, the NC10 came out the best compromise, between price, facilties, robustnessocity and usability.

It also won in a the gadget show's netbook challenge thingy a while ago.

I have the Samsung nc10 7 home basic. Monster battery life and great all round build, nice screen no complaints at all

As above go for the big battery 6 cell model even with wifi it goes for so long!

Nothin wrong with my Acer either, solid, the only advise I can give is set a budget and spec and then look around at whats on offer, don't be swayed by opinions on here, the nuts and bolts of it are most Lappies are built from components from the same factory, the only real difference is the chassis, most people would by a VW before a skoda, but you still get a VW just slightly cheaper!! :)

my mother has had 2 acer laptops and they where both shite ... screen showing stripes after a while, terrible battery life, etc. Hence my remark about the Acer products.

MSI WInd is supposed to be good as well. I think the NC 10 is now called the N210 or something like that .

Take a look at the NC20 (or what ever its called now) the NC10 bigger Brother (12 inch screen) a bit bigger but still small by Laptop standards but a lot more usuable and still same great battery life etc.

The nc10 has been updated a couple of times. They yoink up the price of the newer versions, but the improvements are pretty negligable.

The NC10 is a great bit of kit, had mine for 15months or so now. If I was to get one today I woudl probably get the Samsung N140 (10Hrs battery life) or the N530 (I Think??) which had the same battery life as the NC10 (5-6 Hrs) but has the new Ion chipset so that it will do full HD resolution

Bought the nine cell 7,500 milliamp hour battery, and my word... First charge, used it all day for mobile wi-fi surfing and playing carmageddon and now surfing on an Ethernet cable on 'normal' profile, 16% battery life and indicating 1:53 hours remaining. Had between 7-10 hours perhaps? Also upgraded my RAM to 2gig too. Very, very happy with this machine now. :)
