I've tried Ubuntu a few times over the years and have always come across a reason not to keep it (hardware compatibility with my laptop, software etc). After putting Karmic on a few days ago and playing around a bit I'm pretty confident I could live with it!

All I need is a GOOD alternative to Fireworks CS4 and Illustrator CS4 - any suggestions?

Also what's the best media player for a large music library (24,000 tracks) with iPod support? I used to use Banshee a while back, is there anything better out there these days?

Cheers!

If you find an alternative to illustrator let me know. I tried inkscape, but the shaky eps support ruined the deal for me. Luckily I'm in os x so can just run illustrator anyway, but it's handy to have all the tools I need on every computer in the lab and we've only got limited illustrator licenses.

Can't really help you with the music management side if things.

Was going to suggest Inkscape, but have you tried running your Macromedia apps in Wine? Most work.

Just install wine and run the windows installer. There are a few tricks to get the fonts looking nice etc. (Look up a script called winetricks)

To be honest, if you're using proprietary software for work stuff you probably want to stick with it, so either use it under Wine or dual boot Windows if you've got a valid copy hanging around.

GIMP is fantastic as a Photoshop alternative, but there aren't high quality alternatives to Fireworks or Illustrator yet as far as I know.

Good for you giving it a bash though...no pun intended.

Thanks for the feedback guys!

I'll have a look at inkscape and see how I get on. I was hoping to find asome free legitimate replacements, but maybe I'll have to run what I've got under Wine for now. I've already got a few things runnign under there. I'm probably going to end up with a small Windows partition anyway - but woudl be nice to be able to just boot into Linux 99% of the time!

Will keep you updated if I find anything!

Depending on how powerful your system is, you could always run Virtualbox. I have just done this on my Mythbuntu system. I had to have a small XP VM for some Windows only weather station software. Works a treat and with a very small foot print.

On my Asus eee box 1gb ram 1.6Ghz Atom proc Virtualbox ticks along at about 12% cpu idle, so not too bad.

I read it as an XP VM on Mythbuntu. I'd think you'd want the hardware graphics acceleration for Myth.

(Says he who has changed from Myth to Win7 Media Centre and embarrassingly rates it quite highly)
