windy Posted August 6, 2009 Report Posted August 6, 2009 In my opinion, the passing of this fellow deserves way more lamentation and public ululation than any 'Pop' singer (the 'King' of said genre, included). Quote
Gizmo Posted August 6, 2009 Report Posted August 6, 2009 A true hero passes into the annuals of time and pretty much like the rest of his kind they are more or less forgotten because most were very humble about what they experienced, saw and sacrificed. Thank you to the now lost generation. Quote
Steve1599968621 Posted August 6, 2009 Report Posted August 6, 2009 Wow. Very eloquently put Gizmo. Yes, more as a symbol of everything that was overthrown and hard fought for than as an individual. Lest we forget. Quote
The Geoff Posted August 6, 2009 Report Posted August 6, 2009 "If two governments can't agree, give them a rifle each and let them sort it out. Don't waste 20,000 lives" Fair call I reckon. Quote
dreadycraig Posted August 6, 2009 Report Posted August 6, 2009 Harry Patch (In memory of) I am the only one that got through The others died where ever they fell It was an ambush They came up from all sides Give your leaders each a gun and then let them fight it out themselves I've seen devils coming up from the ground I've seen hell upon this earth The next will be chemical but they will never learn Quote
beth1974uk Posted August 6, 2009 Report Posted August 6, 2009 RIP Harry Patch, Henry Allingham and all the men who have died for the arguments between suited men in governments. I was so pleased to met Henry Allingham a couple of years ago. He was a wonderful gentleman who I feel truely honoured to be able to say I have not only been in the same room as, but also spoken to him and shaken his hand. RIP our True Heros. Quote
Sand-Yeti Posted August 7, 2009 Report Posted August 7, 2009 I'd never heard of these guys until recently. It seems they lived quite unassuming lives after the horrors of WWI. Their longevity was outstanding, their contribution to society only recognised in their latter years by mainstream society I think. I agree that their passing is far more reaching than any plastic popstar. May both these gentlemen rest in peace. Quote
Fluffy-lou Posted August 7, 2009 Report Posted August 7, 2009 I found the playing of the Last Post at his funeral extremely moving - a final farewell not only to him, but to all those who fought in the Great War. RIP Harry, Henry and all the others whose lives were changed by being a part of that conflict. Thank you. Quote
Lars Posted August 7, 2009 Report Posted August 7, 2009 He's off to join the lads in the big bar in the sky for a long overdue pint, no doubt... Different war, but for anyone remotely interested I recommend "Band of Brothers" by Stephen E Ambrose. Not intended to be a crass plug, rather an insight to what these heroes of men went through. We are not worthy... Quote
Alieus Posted August 9, 2009 Report Posted August 9, 2009 I come from Wiltshire, there were lots of people who travelled to see him off! Quote
