Think its right next to the fuel tank or you could ring up a ford dearlership and ask for the spares dept see if they know where it goes as they should be able to look at a diagram of the fuel system on the computer. Think its a bugger to change because of its location and you may need some special tools because of the fuel line being pressurised

Take it we are talking about a petrol engine? as a diesel will be a cannister type filter in the engine bay

From what you say it sounds like you have a diesel, the filter is on the left hand side (looking into the engine bay from the front) at the back next to the bulkhead behind the steering fluid reservoir. You don't have to worry about the air getting in, just make sure the new filter is full to the top before fitting and keep turning the engine over till it start's - easy.

If it is a petrol it's next to the fuel tank.

If it's a Petrol, The filter is next to the tank under the car. It looks like a small silver coke can with a pipe on either end. The pipes are pushed on and should only release the fuel contained in the filter which is enough to make you stink like a petrol station mop. It's better to unbolt the complete bracket from the car then take the filter out on the bench.

Hope this helps Matt.
