Blast Posted October 31, 2008 Report Posted October 31, 2008 Snow for UK? According to a Guardian newspaper article from September the 1st, we might be in for a snowy, cold winter here in the UK. In a piece entitled ‘Is summer really over?’ a long-range forecaster named Harry Kershaw was said to have matched 2008’s weather patterns to those of 1962, which entailed a wet September and a briefly fine October, before descending into a bitter cold winter throughout the start of 1963. So cold in fact, that it became known as The Big Freeze of 1963, and according to the national CET records - which record temperatures going back to 1659 - was only beaten in ferocity by the winter of 1739-40. What happens in a UK super winter? In 1963 the thermometre dropped to -16C, which led to the sea freezing to a distance of 1 mile from Herne Bay, the Thames was briefly turned into a skating rink, and snow settled on much of the country from January until March, with many parts of the country reporting drifts of up to 6 metres. Should Kershaw’s prediction come true, we may well be in for a fantastic year of snow in the UK. In which case, we may be able to take advantage of our natural assets and go riding in our homeland. Aside from the known Scottish resorts of Cairngorm, Nevis Rance, Glencoe, Glenshee and the Lecht, there are also several smaller, lifted resorts in the UK. Some are operated by local ski clubs with a portable generator and rope tow, while Yad Moss, Raise and Swinhope have permanent lifts, on sight facilities (cafes etc), and even piste bashers Lets hope we get wind too! kevob Posted October 31, 2008 Report Posted October 31, 2008 why is it if we have an early cold spell they predict a bad winter just lik if we have a warm spring they say we are going to have a scorching summer warm week in september indian summer why cant i get a job doing these predictions, i mean it must be so easy and i couldnt get it any more wrong than they do now its still impossible to predict more than a few days ahead so its all just speculation and people trying to work past weather systems into some sore of predictable cycle but unfortunately there are just too many influential factors Quote

sidmaniac Posted October 31, 2008 Report Posted October 31, 2008 If only we could get snow like we get rain. Last week in the Lakes we had 45cm of rain in just over 3 days. It would be nice to get a good snowfall and cold snap for a week or two. Thats probably a reasonable wish. Quote

kevob Posted February 8, 2009 Report Posted February 8, 2009 does he? has the sea frozen? is the temp -16c? i think not, i heard about the big freeze of 63 and it was real cold apparently this winter has been cold but seens worse as we have had a few mild winters i would have been closer with the temperature if i had predicted it would be +2c which dosnt seem that cold for winter but that has probably been the daytime average Quote
