Well any frozen lake will do and provided the ice is solid enough (i.e. cold enough wnter!!) - there are lots of lakes in Finland!!

I don't know Ruka well enough to say how close to the ski hills would be a possible area, but I am sure it won't be far!! Just use Google Earth!!

I went there nearly 2 years ago - really nice place with lots of frozen lakes surrounded by forest. At that time of year the lakes are well frozen (they drive tanks on them!!!!!). Only trouble is, in the week we were there, which was also February, there was absolutely no wind at all - you could have lit a candle at the start of the week and it would have still been burning when we left. As for snowkiting on the slopes - no chance! The main ski resort at Ruka is quite small and get get fairly busy during the local holidays. There is a fantastic superpipe though along with some nice jumps and rails.

It's worth taking your kite if you've got space just in case but don't bank on using it much!!

You absolutely have to do the Husky dog sledding though - one of the most incredible experiences I've ever had. Snowmobiles on the frozen lakes is great fun too.

And don't forget your thermals, went down to -27 at night - the water on your eyes freezes between blinks

Think i will take a kite just incase. Went to Livigno in italy in january this year and was gutted i didnt take one with me when i saw the frozen lake there. Would have been ideal, and there was plenty of wind to get me moving too.
