  1. Flysurfer Roll Leash - 06/2016 - 20% off: AUD 100 - Reason for selling: family commitment - Payment by cash or PayPal
  2. I bought a reel leash as I was tired of spending more time in a session body dragging back to my board after my kite ended up in the sea than actually trying to kitesurf. Here are my thoughts on the Oceanus "Eel" reel leash. Build quality: The overall construction is very good quality, stainless steel is used throughout all the metal parts, and by the looks of it polycarbonate plastic for the actual body and some of the internals which is nice and thick so should stand up to knocks well. the leash it'self is a soft nylon ribbon with a stainless clip for attaching to the lanyard that you screw to your board. This leash has no elastic bungee either, it has a metre long braided rope that you attach to a screw on your board. On the back of the reel there is a nice neoprene pad to cushion you from any impact when you are bustin out some crazy moves, or incase you land on the unit in the shallows. The reel attaches to your harness via a cordura loop which is nice and wide so will keep it from wobbling whilst you are surfing. Fitting the reel: I have been using the "Eel" for my last 4 sessions boarding and so far I'm really impressed. I have attached the reel to the spreader bar on my harness as there is little space on the webbing straps as I have to cinch these right in as the harness is a bit on the large side, however I find this is a good place for the unit as it is directly above where I attach the leash to my board. Due to mounting the reel on my spreader bar I have had to trim the neoprene pad a little to allow the device to sit right but this was easily accomplished with some scissors. The other element that needs fitting to your equipment is the board lanyard. This is a braided soft rope with a loop at one end for connecting to the reel and a webbing strap at the other end for attaching to your board. I fitted the lanyard to my board on an empty handle in-sert in the centre of the board, which in my opinion is safer than using a fin screw or a fitting at the end of the board, but I will comment on this later. Using the reel: So I got my kite set up wetsuit on etc and took to the sea. To be honest once you are all hooked up you can't even tell the leash is there. Due to the lanyard the leash remains fully retracted in the unit until you become seperated from your board, at this point the 10 foot long ribbon is spooled out of the reel until it reaches it's full extent. Obviously there is tension on the ribbon but it is so little force that generally your board will remain 10 feet away from you, at this point you can leave it there if you need to re-launch your kite, or if you are all set to get going again you simply pull on the ribbon to bring your board nearer to you. As you do this the reel will simply gather up the slack ribbon that you are feeding it until you have your board back in your grasp. Safety: Now this is where a lot of people will be thinking "I don't like the sound of this leash business" well I'm still in the early stages of learning to surf and as much as I'm improving I still rely a lot on the leash. I find it just means that you can forget about your board whilst you are coughing the north sea out of your lungs or trying to wrangle your kite from the water. A lot of people frown on leashes as they think that they can ping your board back at you in the event of a crash. So far with this system I have never been hit by my board and I have had some pretty bad crashes too. Yes you can get tangled up in the leash but generally I find the 10 seconds it takes to pass the leash under your crotch easily outweigh the minute or so of dragging to your board as the tide decides it wants it, especially if you are struggling with your kite as the wind has died and the chuffer won't re-launch! Conclusion: In my opinion the "Eel" is a really good reliable system that would probably suit beginners more than experienced surfers. This is mainly due to the progression you make as you improve you will probably crash a lot less, that is until the tricks begin! I have never had my board even come close to me after a crash due to the reel pinging it back at me so I don't feel this is an issue with this system probably due to the lack of any elastic and the reel only has the power to reel the board back to you when you assist it. As for fitting the lanyard I feel the centre holes on the board are safest, as if you use one on either end of the board there is a chance that the board could be propelled back towards you as the board will travel well being pulled from either tip. As I have set my leash up the board tends to roll over onto it's back and remain there. Hope this review helps. By : AlliDelta
