Amazon Service

I don't know how the customer service is around the world but here in the UK I have to say it's pretty good.  Now that could be genuine or because I'd been a member since 2003 and a prime member for nearly a decade.  One example I can recall was quite a few years ago when I bought my son a Leapfrog camera and all the packaging was in french.  Got in touch and they sent another one out and said return the one you have anytime within the next 30 days.  I ended up with 2 in the house...needless to say this one was french too.  In the end I sent both back and went to Argos for it but Amazon were happy to compensate in terms of a voucher.  I've had many vouchers and extensions of my prime service as they make sure to retain you as a customer.  Live chat is a great tool.

What are your experiences like with Amazon's customer service?

I purchased a 'geared head' for a tripod in the studio, a couple of months after purchase it broke in the sense it's meant to provide precision movements. It would jump 1" when adjusting instead of 1mm, this was a challenge to try and get them to understand the issue and authorise a return.  In the end I returned it and walked in to a local camera store and bought the same one again at a slightly higher price in case it happened again.

Overall for everyday items I find Amazon's service good, for more specialised purchases I'll keep going direct to those retailers in those niches.

I agree.  I generally purchase all of my specialized items direct from a retailer.  Specifically I have been purchasing motorcycle parts lately and I like the support and advice I get from the retailers.

Amazon Japan I've had the most dealings with. Most of the website that matters is in English. I've returned a number of things I've not been happy with, or like with shoes just bought two in different sizes and sent back the ones that didn't fit. Zero issues. Probably because it's automated...

Amazon US... The one time I tried a claim was for a graphic novel that has a  section of pages out of order... And the pages weren't numbered. The Indian chap on the help line didn't seem to believe me and wouldn't take the return. Weird.
